Just a mild rant, I’m probably in the wrong for being irritated, but I’ll definitely not be buying anything age restricted in there again. Couple of years ago I was perusing the ales, picked out one or two and went to the counter. Was about to pay and the cashier on the adjacent till butted in and said “you can’t serve him love, he’s buying for underage girls”. I was absolutely astounded, given that I was literally buying two bottles of ale for myself, and had arrived at, entered, and perused the store completely alone. Had a wee debate about the (quite hurtful) assumption, and asked the woman to point out who I was buying for. She pointed at a bunch of 4 or 5 young lasses, and said I was buying for them. This was amusingly resolved when I pointed out that I’d never seen them in my life, and more importantly, they were currently buying booze. At a till. With valid ID. Anyway, went in again with my Mrs today. Bought a small 20% gin liquor thing she likes for the weekend. Got the same woman from a couple of years ago. “Can I see your IDs?” “Aye, no worries” “We can’t accept that love” My Mrs only has one form of ID while her more recent stuff is with the Home Office for a visa renewal. It’s an official government issued, holographic photo ID with date of birth clearly shown (she’s 28). Denied because it’s been expired since 2019. I mean come on, the picture is clearly her, she’s 3 years over your challenge 25 policy, and the date of birth is right there. “Yeah but it’s expired love” Had her date of birth expired? Ridiculous. It’s a bottle of gin, not an application for residence. I know people in here will say company policy etc, but the futility of it really got me. All it achieved was píssing us off, before we literally just went next door to Aldi and bought the same thing with the same ID.
I sympathise, but they can be fined and lose their job.If they don't do IT by the book, that's the law.
Maybe you've just got one of those faces matey. Sure the management will be extremely pleased with her performance, losing customers and all at a time like this... good going!
It is common for teenagers to ask other people to buy alcohol. I wasn't allowed to buy gin once when I was with my daughter because didn't have her ID and she was helping me load the shopping.
I understand that, but if there's women with valid ID buying alcohol too..?! Makes no sense. Im sticking with the face thing
When I worked in the bookies, we were told that expired ID was still valid, because you can't change your date of birth. Sounds more like company policy rather than abiding by the law. That being said, it is 9 years since I left the bookies.
I can beat that. I once tried to buy booze from my local village shop, the girl serving me was the year above me at school, we knew each other, she knew how old I was......but couldn't serve me because I didn't have ID. I said, did we go to school together? Yes Do you know how old I am? Yes So you can serve me? No Policy is that you need ID. Thick as two short planks.
She really isn’t. She’s doing her job as described by the law. It’s her job on the line if she was seen not doing the right thing.
I was IDing some young un in pub last month. He looked young. At the time I'd lost my bank card so had my licence on me to use as ID if I needed to go to the bank. A lot of young uns carry fake ID and they are so like to real thing it's unbelievable. Anyway I checked it and like you do look straight at the foto and DOB. Both spot on. Then I noticed the name on it ........ Lord Love Rocket ! So didn't serve him but got my own licence out and put them side by side. Identical to look at. If it hadn't been for the name (funny I thought) he'd probably have got away with it
The world that people want to live in always amazes me. "She's just doing her job". What if her job is to terminate Jews? That was a job in the not too distant past in a place not too far from here. You have no responsibility as a human being to step up and say, "Actually, I think I'll apply my own values to this situation"? I know many believe you don't, and that you should do as you're told, and they articulate that at every opportunity, and I know it's a major reason why I believe I am an alien desperate to go home. But I don't know where home is, just that it's not here.
I’d happily lose my job to save a life, I wouldn’t lose my job so someone can have a bottle of gin. At work, I can’t lend the student DVDs that they’re not old enough to borrow. I don’t care how many times they tell me they’ve watched it at home, or if a parent puts a note in their planner saying they can watch if, I’m not losing my job so they can watch Batman Returns.
