https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-norfolk-61376652 Id be careful what you wish for - currently they have an owner who is a true fan - I am not sure Norwich would attract a rich arab or russian so they may finish up with owners like Blackpool Blackburn Barnsley Oldham etc - get rid of Delia and they could be playing us in the 4th division in a few years
What is 'Proper Investment'? It's not like the club didn't recruit in the Summer. They just recruited badly and had a manager who ditched the style of play that saw them win the Championship at a canter. Appreciate there's different issues at different clubs, but this obsession with protesting as soon as things don't go your way on the pitch seems to more prevalent than at any other time in my football watching life. Must have been about 15-20 clubs protested against something this season. Even Forest Green Rovers were boo'd off the pitch when they drew/lost with Harrogate last week! Is it an entitlement issue, a demand for instant success, effect of lockdowns and Covid, or just a case that every club deserves the protests they see?
There just are no words. Norwich would be one of the few examples I'd cite of prudent management, patience and gradual building. Mind you, I was at the inlaws at the weekend. A certain arsenal supporter was hugely critical of his side only beating Leeds 2-1. I mean... I agreed (love to see dirty leeds being hammered), but when I suggested he should be grateful of what 3 points feels like given how few we'd had over the season, he soon shushed.
Where did I mention Barnsley specifically? Did you deliberately miss out where I said 'there's different issues at different football clubs'?
It's what fans are like in 2022. They try and hide it but I put it on here before. It's the taking my ball home mentality and I can't understand those that do it but a lot of people are like that. It's gone from lose 3 in a row to wanting a manager sacked to wanting owners out.
I suspect for a catchment area with no rivals they expect to be more than just a yoyo club. They have no competition from other local professional clubs for custom, but cannot establish themselves whenever they reach the top flight.
This is presumably coming from the younger part of the fan-base. In the early 90s they had a massive public campaign to get rid of then-owner Robert Chase, which often featured on the local East Anglia news. It took a while to remove him and I think Delia and her husband were the ones who took over from him.
The same fans chanting out will be cheering when they are winning most of their games next seasons. It’s the modern way.
Read an article in i newspaper on Saturday saying how much it was costing to be a yo-yo club from championship to Prem. Seems that the lion’s share of all money goes to the big six and there are about six clubs in prem 1.5. It’s impossible to get the players you need with a relegation clause and you sign them anyway and parachutes doesn’t cover it, but then you have a team too good for the championship, but not for the prem. Meanwhile the rest of the championship can’t get a look in. Interesting figures.
Andrew Clarke at the Reds report live thing. The CEO before that. A strong message from them is if things aren't good enough, don't blame the owners because it's us that's at fault. Problems carry over from Mr Cryne to the new ownership model. Things carry over from Ben Mansford to Shaun whatever he was called. to Gauthier Ganaye to Dane Murphy to Khaled El-Ahmad. There are people that marry all those people together but it's easy to blame the owner isn't Jay?
Maybe we just hear about it more now with social media and fans jumping on the bandwagon, but there have been protests as far back as i can remember, and many of them arguably more potent (i.e. actual protests) than anything we have seen this season. The Doncaster Rovers protests in the late 90s are the most vivid in my memory. I also remember reds fans shouting 'Dennis out' across the pitch at him at Stockport (not sure why i remember that particular away game but i always remember it), and Peterborough fans gathering en-masse behind their offices shouting 'Fry out' after we played them there in the early 00s. And more recently, pre-pandemic, there was the joint-Leyton Orient/Blackpool protest, Torquay and many others. I think a big issue now is that coke-taking is on the rise at football and kids get caught up in the emotions and fight rival fans, each other, or against the club without really being able to rationalize or contextualize what they are protesting about - as you suggest, perhaps its entitlement or maybe a lot of is down to oversees owners that come in, don't deliver and then go AWOL without warning? Those Donny protests really were make-or-break in terms of whether the town would continue to have a football club - you could feel the sadness and desperation; today football is much less personal (due to money/Sky ruining it to an extent), so the Oystons, Chansiris & Conways of this world can continue to wreak havoc from afar, and don't appear to bat an eyelid what the fan on the street thinks, because oftentimes they aren't even in the same country as them, nevermind the same postcode.
Not suggesting protests never happened. Far from it. But there seems to be a lot more frustration from supporters when results go south than in previous decades. Less high profile protests like you've called out, and lots of smaller scale ones that get a bit of publicity due to social but not at mainstream sports media level. Was an open question really on why that might be. One answer could be, like you touched on, the rising investment and finances involved in football meaning more owners are under scrutiny, jumping ship, threatening the future of the club. Or the fit and proper person test that doesn't appear to be worth the paper it is written on.
I quite like reading the pink un. Reasonable fans, most accept that they are a yo yo club and that the Smiths have Norwich best interests at heart. Some want them out though. Getting rid of Farke hasn't really helped them much, imo. Even if evey team was bought up by super rich owners it wouldn't really change much, the Lindon clubs will attract the best foreign players because of location and the NE, Norwich would struggle because they're remote comparatively.
You were discussing fans protests against their owners. We are on set of fans doing so albeit in a half arsed way. Why mention them being entitled and expecting success if you don’t feel it’s relevant to us? Deflect. Blame the fans. Isolate Conway. Blame him. Protect the board. Seems on the surface the next the plan.
