In your opinion who does the club need to make a decision ASAP. By this, I mean building a team to fit x player. In my opinion. Cauley Woodrow. Cauley's good at some things are just doesn't do others. He affects and dictates how the complete 11 play inc formation to get the best out of him.
It's just something I've thought about with teams. I look at players and think who are you like. Now people will bash me but I look at Woodrow and I see the drop in striker. So I look at the best and the teams they have played in. The Harry Kanes the Roberto Firmino. What do Spurs and Liverpool have? Now Quality scales so that doesn't matter to me. They both have CMs that are strong. Don't attack too much. They don't have the number 10 floaters that will get in the way. Also, they have players that will importantly run in behind. Since Friser went we don't have that in our team. When Woodrow was at his best for Barnsley he was in that 10 role IMO with Chaplin and Brown doing the running behind. Woodrow doesn't press that well. Hes better sitting on a DM. Others hopefully will think of other players we have.
If either Woodrow or Morris stay, then we need to find a way of getting the best out of them. If they both stay then the new coach needs to find a system that works well with them playing together. But the likelihood of them both staying is pretty slim. And I think we’ll need to find players that can come in and help the likes of Marsh, Wolfe and Kitching develop.
Of course, it's all hypothetical because the seasons are not even finished. I think Morris fits into most 4231/433/ 343 systems playing off the left. Get a CM who will do the running a little bit for him defensively. an attacking left-footed LB and just tell him to get on the ball and run at the opposition. I'd be sending Marsh to Denmark for 6 months minimum and saying get game time.
I can think of a couple of reasons why we shouldn't go down that route. What if player X gets injured? You'd need a like for like replacement. Secondly, it doesn't give you flexibility which means that once the opposition suss you out you're easier to play against and it's easier to pick up points against you. You need options and a system that allows adaptability in the course of a game.
I'd go back to 4-4-2 in League 1 and get back to basics. Thomas and Oduor on the wings. Instructed to cross or shoot when in advanced positions. I think Thomas in particular needs his mind made up for him. As in you do this or you do that.
So you would look to move him on then? because surely you don't want a 400k a year player say who's only performing at 60%. Fair enough. Who do you think the club do plan from Brewerystander?
Not sure what you're extrapolating from there. I simply said that it would be folly to build a team around just one player for the reasons I gave, choose whether it's player X or player Y.
Goals matter in L1. I’d sell everyone and try and keep hold of Morris and Woodrow. You have a base of 40-50 goals in L1. Puts you near a play off place.
I agree , to do well in any league you need goals, a fit Woodrow & Morris would be as good a pairing as any team in division one, players who can provide their ammunition are a priority .
I Agree this front 3 bllx needs to get gone, no one knows who’s a striker and who’s playing deep and who’s a winger. Play 1 or 2 players as strikers and stop trying to pretend we can play like Man City.
Next season I'd go: Walton. J.Williams, Moon, Kitching, Odour Thomas, Kane, Wolfe, Iseka. Cole, Marsh. Subs: Helliwell. Ackroyd. Schmidt. Aitchison. Benson.
Cauley Woodrow post lockdown hardly scored an open play goal though Jimmy so that's why ( in my opinion only) I suggested in the first post that you have to gear the team to him.
I'm not sure what do say to that. Although I will comment that I wouldn't want either of the front two at Barnsley on September 1st for different reasons.
Not that I think we will be able to but if you keep Woodrow and Morris you would finish top 6. Woodrow will score in L1. His pace has gone but his positional sense hasn’t. As others have said I would keep it simple and okay to their strengths. Reality is we will keep neither.
If he's staying, Cauley Woodrow should be the first name on the teamsheet next season. He's the bloke we should be building our team around - getting him as many goalscoring opportunities as possible.
