I think there are some people that genuinely believe in the sanctity of life and conception and the miracle and all that jazz. And from that viewpoint, opposition to abortion I can understand. But I think it's a minority. To my read, a much larger number oppose abortion because it is jarring to think about - it's unsettling, difficult to get your brain around, and most importantly it's the best example of the randomness of life. We've all looked back and thought about instances or choices that could have totally changed our lives. Abortion is the biggest fish of all of them. Opposing abortion is comforting and eliminating abortion would get rid of one of those factors of ultimate instability and insecurity. Someone I used to know was adamantly against abortion because they were the child of a teenage mom. "That could have been me, I wouldn't have existed" was their refrain. And I can understand that. But they were genuinely floored when a friend of ours posited "You wouldn't have existed if your mom had had sex a day later, or with a different man, or was conceived via a different sperm even on that very day. It's all random. None of those may have resulted in you." This had never occurred to them. And it shook them to their core. From this perspective, if you find the randomness of life overwhelming. If you are shaken by the insecurity inherent in life. I can see how abortion is terrifying - and it's not surprise that opposition to abortion comes largely from people that need the structure and consistency of religion to reduce insecurity and guide their life.
The religion thing is a strange one though - in Judaism it most definitely prioritises the Mother over the unborn Nothing I am aware of in the New Testament explictily overrides that Also as mentioned above in this thead it is a mostly right wing Christian view that is pro life - but also very much not pro support of low income (single) mothers after child is born, or even pro healthcare for them oh and also and pro death penalty - the contradiction is quite bizarre
The word ‘abortion’ describes any medical procedure that ends a pregnancy, by deliberately ending the life of an unborn child.
By removing an embryo or fetus before it is able to grow into a child* Easy mistake to make, I suppose. Hope I cleared up your misunderstanding.
I knew a bloke that had an operation to remove a brain tumour and it ended up killing him. I reckon he regretted that. Maybe we should never remove brain tumours again?
The argument of "I know someone that had this medical procedure done and regretted it" is not an argument for banning said medical procedure. I was giving a purposely exaggerated example.
In the United Kingdom, over 200,000 unborn children have their lives ended each year through abortion.
Aah, right to life. A definitely not sanctimonious organisation who not only preach about abortion, but also assisted suicide and euthanasia. So it not only wants people to not have the choice to bring new life into the world, but also deny people facing a horrendous future a dignified ending on their own terms. Having watched my dad rot in a care home throughout a lot of his thirties before finally succumbing at the age of 42; having suffered years of little to no dignity, no real life. Unable to recognise me as his son, not knowing what year it was most of the time. Having strangers wipe his arse and wash his bits daily (to be fair he probably enjoyed that bit…), unable to eat or drink himself, stand, walk, even sit unaided for a lot of it. And worst of all, indoctrinated by the catholic bloody church. Carted off to Lourdes on a healing trip. All religion gained him was a set of plastic Rosary beads and a more expensive funeral for me. He saw what was coming. Tried to end his own life years before. He was unsuccessful - and me as a child wouldn’t speak to him for months. I didn’t understand. I do now. If I had my time again I’d help him, even if it meant a twenty stretch for murder. So I say this with full sincerity. You can take your pro life ********, stick it right up your arris, and foook right off. When you’ve ****** off, **** off again. When you’ve done that, **** off all over again just in case. Many thanks.
It does. And in the vast majority of abortions that unborn child would not survive outside the womb. Plus, do you know how often women miscarry? Likelihood is of that 200 000 1/4 of them wouldnt have survived to the end of term anyway. But the crucial fact remains, its a woman's right to choose And be under no illusion, if men had to endure 9 months of unwanted pregnancy no way would abortion be repealed in America.
