    On the one hand I like to see the best teams at tournaments, and Italy tend to step up a la Euro 2020 at the last minute, but this is two World Cups in a row they've failed to qualify for, and therefore don't deserve to be there. Also, who doesn't love an underdog story!

    I'm disappointed. It undervalues the tournament. The big nations should all automatically qualify for me. Leave qualification for Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.

    Absolutely not. They won the Euros and seemingly thought they'd piss WC qualifying, the fact they've been knocked out by a team who may qualify for their first ever tournament is both brilliant and hilarious.

    What's "coming Rome" now lads? Not the World Cup that's for sure.

    I love Italy and their football was the best at the Euros but they haven't qualified so that's that.

    Yeah I'm not sure we should be taking the piss. I'd take a few tournament misses over a world cup final win or Euro final win every time.

    If you're a winner losing in the Semi-Final and Final in successive tournament is progression as such. However, it still amounts to the same thing. With Tournaments every four years. It's just pot luck if your chance will come again. I reckon England have had their "era" now. They'll go into this World Cup as one of the favourites because they can't hide behind being a work in progress.

    That gives them another problem in this country it's o.k to be a "gallant loser". Open top bus rides after Italia 90 etc. Sports Personality appearances. When Germany lost to England in Euro 2020 it was national disaster as it is when Holland don't qualify or France get knocked out. We have this never mind there's always four years time. The fact is there isn't always four years time.

    As Italy can be testament to. Their best team in years hasn't even made it to the World Cup.
