When you have the previous owner for years constantly telling us we can't compete, and then taken over by supposed billionaires who make Scrooge look profligate.... Is it any wonder, cos when we do see any type of success, it is repeatedly pulled from under our feet. I think the club are bloody lucky that we take so much crap
Don’t forget the, “They stopped Paul Sykes from joining the club so **** em” allus used as a reason by those that didn’t go to games. Imagine that lie being picked up in todays social media. According to John Dennis in his Biography. Paul Sykes never showed any interest. I’ve no reason to disbelieve him. As for the op. No. You only have to listen to football heaven or go on other fan sites. Fans are fickle. Take West Brom fans during the Val era and shortly afterwards when the club was dropping like a stone
Or probability. If the results and league position doesn't change we will be. There's a few half arsed stats for you.
I personally think Cryne was good for the club in stepping in. However, he was a total disaster in terms of morale.
i remember my morale being at its lowest ebb as i bounced around at Wembley after Lloyd Isgrove netted to make it 3-1. Over 50 years support that was right up there and under Patrick Cryne’s stewardship.
Going by my dad, if he was typical then I'd say yes we are overly negative. Even on the morning of the day we beat Bradford in 1997 he was convinced we'd screw it up. Bless him. Edit; Last season when we won 7 on the trot, it felt quite other-worldly, I had a brief peek at the life of say a Liverpool or Man City fan, I'm not sure I liked it....
Barnsley fans at Blackpool chanting “we’re f****** s***” against their own team, which was before we’d lost god knows how many on the trot, and before the west stand debacle. I’d say that portions of the fan base can be pretty negative.
I don't think its negativity, but I do think there is a sense of not wanting to be let down which manifests a perceived pessimism, often to the most extreme extent, even if its an unlikely possibility. My grandad was the same on the day of the Bradford game. "They'll not win it, I don't know why you're going." When I got back home several hours after the game, he had a grin on his face (that was about as much as he expressed in terms of satisfaction). I grinned back. His next words.... "They'll get hammered every week and not stay up next season though"
No. I do believe, though, that social media sites (including this one) allows more extreme views from the ultra positive to maniacal negativity to be aired. However, the vast majority of fans don't fall into those polarised views.
Football fans are reactive, flippant, and in the main tend to always expect the worst. We're no different to other fan bases. We just see our negativity a lot more. You only have to look at protests and booing going off at c. 20% of clubs on a regular basis to realise it isn't just us, and quite a narrow view to suggest otherwise.
That's just a world-weary defence mechanism. The 15 year old me travelling across the pennines for that Bradford game didn't have any doubt that we'd win. If we were to find ourselves in the same situation now, I'll be convinced that we'll mess it up. Just as I will be when heading across for the Reading game. But I think some of the negativity is around people's reactions to what has happened, rather than what they predict will happen. Chanting that we're s***, and booing players onto the pitch serves no purpose. And I find some of the noises on here and especially Twitter frustrating. "Not even league 2 standard" is a phrase often thrown about on here, I remember someone saying that Jordan Williams should've been loaned out to non-league! Just nonsense. Then we have valid complaints about the ownership group being diluted by nonsense conspiracy theories, such as Poya being mandated to select Jasper Moon. Despite the fact that he only picks him when there's been multiple injuries to defenders.
I don't disagree with you on those points. I do think there is a wider negative hyperbole nowadays that takes things to an unlikely extreme and I don't think that's just BFC related. It's generally a knee jerk frustration, but its often over the top and doesn't always stand the test of scrutiny. And sadly, it can be used as a mechanism to deflect proper discussion and debate. You also have the snides who struggle with a different point of view so instantly have to make something personal. The world would be a much better place without such people.
