It is a bit bizarre. I want to book crossings for Sept but will hold fire for a day or two. Theyre saying they've secured investment so can't have gone bust.

But why stop sailing pending an announcement that seems really strange

    WOW
Understand that all sailing staff at P&O Ferries have been made redundant with immediate effect.

The company will use an agency to keep their ferries running and current staff will be able to apply to the agency for work.

Just seen that on twitter, if its genuine that's not going to end well and I will definitely not be sailing with them again

Looks like they really have just sacked their entire sailing staff and plan to replace with cheaper agency workers
Surely thats not legal - You cant make staff redundant and then immediately give their jobs to others on worse terms
also to put entirely new crews on with no handover doesnt sound very safe to me either
No decent people would ever book with them again if this is the case

DFDS or Brittany Ferries for me in future if I am not using the tunnel

Apparently the scabbing 8astards are on coaches waiting at the port to march onboard.

I always like my heavy machinery to be run by agency staff. Much safer for all involved.

The announcement is later today. They've been mentioning the decision on every bulletin since this morning. Horrendous behaviour. Wonder how many staff will be effected?!?

It is really bad PR and I don't know where they stand legally to do it.

I'd go via the tunnel but i've just bought a bi-fuel car so not allowed.

That’s going to remove my Cairnryan to Larne option then.

Furthest I ever go these days is Gainsborough or Louth.
    No ships involved.

I think there are some odd laws around employment rights at sea that give employers a loophole.

You're right. When I took my redundancy I had the option to reapply for my own job back. All they did was remove a level of management and change everyone's job titles. So doing the exact same job with a different name attached to it. I had to work a week for every year of service but did have option of leaving if Id found alternative employment.

I never realised though that you could be made redundant with immediate effect. Especially as it looks like plans already in place to replace you and the employer continues to operate.

Don’t think Ferries count as they spend too much time in the same place.
Spent a lot of time in past working on cruise ships and they do have different rules as they spend most of time in International waters.

edit see response further down to myself
