why a team that had just gone through a patch of relatively good performances and ground out some really great results, has one personnel change and performs so badly in game that all must recognise could have a massive impact on our season! Why?
Simply because it was not only about one team, Derby were back to full strength , Rooney had done a job on the officials, Derby played extremely well & we were poor, we are not where we are because we are a good team, we are down there on merit , Derby are a mid table side , we are a bottom three side & that was evident yesterday , both teams got what they deserved but it was not all down to us .
Prior to yesterday we'd played 33 league games and lost 20 of them. Describing our performance as rubbish in a lot of those games would be flattering us. A defeat yesterday was by far the most likely result. A poor performance, while not guaranteed, wasn't far off. You'd have to ignore 90 per cent of the games this season to believe otherwise.
Last eight home games they have won 6, drawn 1 and lost 1. The fans are getting behind them like our own fans did the team when Flicker was trying to do a great escape and the old saying home advantage is working for them.
Such a good job that the ref didnt send off Wolfe after 10 minutes when no one could have complained if he had done. I didnt think the ref was great but I dont think he favoured Derby overmuch - Both Linesmen missed offsides by being behind the play. Had we played like we did the previous two games we would have probably won but for whatever reason we were back to familiar territory in playing badly - not sure if it was the pressure that got to the players or tactics but for sure the loss of Williams had a bigger effect than I would like - especially if he is out of action now for the rest of the season
Not sure we can claim offsides were missed. The first phase of the goal is really, really tight and I think the VAR lines would have it onside - taking my Barnsley hat off I would always want those tight ones to go towards the attacking team. The second phase was never offside in a million years - it really was a superbly worked goal, even if we contributed massively to how easy it was.
To Be fair their goal was extremely tight If you freeze frame this is as close as I can get to the moment of impact on the ball. Yopur image is after Mads moves his foot back. From this angle its very close and I genuinely cant tell - if you go back one more frame Mads foot is further forward and he is off But I agree we should give the benefit of any tight decision to the attacker - no idea what VAR would have given but its one of those toenail jobs either way. Linesman was in a good position and it could have gone either way and I wouldnt have criticised him He should have been off if Mads had been paying attention though. And Mads definitely bought the Dummy at full price as he would have cut out the through ball otherwise. Well worked goal from Derby though and it deserved to stand. Less said about our defending the better
That's still a freeze frame too early. I think VAR lines would give this onside as the line goes up from Madds' foot and plays him on.
His head is offside. And his foot. And his knee. I've seen the analyst's side-on angle, and it's slightly clearer, naturally. The sort of view the lino had. I don't hold a grudge on this one, because it's marginal as **** in real-time, without the benefit of VAR etc. And, let's be honest, we were **** yesterday and we'd have still lost. I was more angry at the disallowed Leya Iseka goal against Cardiff to be honest. Because he was half a yard on, and we definitely didn't deserve to lose that.
Plus we have a coach that thinks defending and not attacking is the be all and end all . despite being proven in the few games previous attack does work. Verdict asbaghi is not good enough
I'm not sure about not good enough. However, what disappoints me is that lessons weren't learned after Coventry game. I thought we were over that especially what I witnessed at Hull. We need to be braver and more attacking to get out if trouble
I am not sure what match you were watching but a booking for Wolfe was right and never a red in a million years but we got nothing off the officials at all in the first half although I thought they were more balanced in the second, however Rooney complaining to the National press & TV during in the week about how Officials were giving them a hard time etc etc certainly bore fruit with the first goal , but in my comment I said both teams on the day got what they deserved , we deserved nothing .
I mean this with the most sincerity possible, but he was probably watching a more accurate game than yourself. Wolfe was very, very lucky to not have two yellow cards in the first ten minutes - neither were red cards individually but both were yellows in waiting. Thought it was good refereeing to put Wolfe on a final warning so early, rather than ruin the game, but other referees would have sent him packing for recklessness.
Don't forget that we also have a media team, a CEO, a group of owners who the media wants to talk to and a manager with a mouth. We chose not to make the same comments that Rooney did
I know this might be a stupid question but if the club has footage that shows him clearly offside why would we not use that in the match recap rather than showing a freeze frame where he looks onside?
Can’t tell if he’s offside from those stills but can tell that either Gomes or Styles should be closer to Lawrence, Morrison has made a run that hasn’t been tracked and Mads is ball watching. Dreadful defending
the thing is this isn't the season that's behind us, this is our immediate future. We now have midfield that has shown signs of life and a team that has displayed a little bit of 'go at them' attitude. I get there are two teams in a game but that is why we need to go for it from the off, to set the agenda and tempo for the game and get in faces. I'm just baffled that we change a winning mindset in a 'must win game'. Was it the players, the manager, absence of Williams, or what. We're in boom or bust territory, we must set up to win and play like we mean it - whoever the opposition. If we don't have the right mindset we haven't a chance. So frustrating when we've shown glimpses!
I feel like we're giving Derby zero credit for how they setup. Everything that worked for us and allowed us to get up the field quickly against Boro just didn't come off for us. We gave the ball away time and time again to put ourselves under ridiculous pressure, and when you do that you get dragged deep as it feels like an avalanche of opposition pressure. The gap between Morris and our 'back nine' was too great because of this - if we'd have closed that gap we'd have had less bodies to deal with the Derby possession. The way we used Morris against Boro just didn't happen this time, and Bassi was never allowed to be in space and if he tried to open up the field he'd miscalculate it - although more often than not he just wasn't available. Derby's home form is really strong. They equally want to start on the front foot from the off, so someone has to lose that battle. The width they played with really frustrated us and they doubled up out wide to stop any connection between our full backs and our wide players. Unlike against Boro. The counter attack, when it was on, never happened due to poor control, poor passing, or poor decision making. There was a bit more about us than against Coventry, but individual errors and losing individual battles meant we never got a control on the game. Any changes made at half time to reverse the performance of the first half went up in smoke when Brittain decided he couldn't trap a football or cut out a slow pass. Hopefully we're at it a lot more against Stoke.
Because it’s analyst footage and not great quality. They don’t shoot in HD. And the footage used shows him offside regardless. And as I’ve already said, whilst it’s a worthy topic for discussion, it’s not really relevant to the result of a match in which we were distinctly second best.
You should know by now that when we lose it’s because the players/staff are ****. That goes for most football fans, not just ours. It’s very rare that someone - like yourself - points out just how good the opposition were. I said to my colleague after 10 mins “we’re getting beat today” because it looked that obvious to me. Derby were quicker, had more energy, were winning all the seconds and it seemed a matter of time until they took the lead. In fairness, it took an (admittedly well-crafted) dubious goal to break the deadlock and then an error and a bit of fortune to double the lead. And, we had two or three opportunities that we should have scored from. So it didn’t end up as bleak as it may have. They played in midweek, away in Cardiff, we had a full week to rest and prepare. But it looked like the opposite. Not great at all and saddening, as I said last night on here. We clearly need to start well in games else we are getting nothing. We can’t play from behind. We need positive momentum. Huge 10 days in front of us. I hope to see fast starts and more ambition to be first to things. Too many occasions yesterday we made 50/50s look like 70/30s in their favour.
