with the press of a button I can get the food shopping delivered - clothes ordered on line - pizza/Mcdonalds delivered - can work from home - children taught on-line - talk to friends - have a drs appointment etc etc. Is the day coming when we no longer go to football grounds but just press the button and all matches are on-line/televised and we watch form home ?
I've fell into that bug with lockdown and everything. I only go out to work. That's it unless we've something planned. I don't randomly go to the pub anymore. Laura does the grocery shopping on line and has that delivered. A bit sad really.
I was watching sonething about this new virtual world the tech companies are creating. And one thing was practising for emergencies. Except it just is nowhere near real life, they weren't lifting the heavy bodies of actors, getting rid of nosey onlookers, physically dealing with the smoke etc etc. It's like with clothes shopping. I want to feel the material, look at the exact shade of green. I'm looking at kitchens at and what I see in showrooms translates very differently to them in a book or on-line. Footballs the same, you can't beat actually being there.
I thought he meant he prefers to let his sofa watch the football whilst he does something much more fun.
In a word. Yes. Have a read of ‘The Machine Stops’ “Written in 1909, E. M. Forster's "The Machine Stops" is a tragically prophetic meditation upon the consequences of man's over reliance upon technology. It describes a world in which humans have lost the ability to live on the surface of the Earth. Each individual lives in isolation in a 'cell', with all bodily and spiritual needs met by the omnipotent, global Machine.” Free download below https://archive.org/details/e.-m.-forster-the-machine-stops_202008
