I read a report today that 8.6 milion people are in financial difficulty now and rely on family or using credit cards to pay bills. Due to covid and the huge rise in costs 4 gas, leccy, fuel, food and council tax rises. It said half a million could lose homes in next 12 to 24 months.

Worrying times ahead for many. Im a cab driver in conwy and since turn of year im getting about a third of money i get from march through til october. Its hard work. Hope for better for everyone in UK and all reds fans.

Saw this video today with a young bloke saying that him and his wife have taken to using candles to cut their electricity bill. Truly shocking.

Utter dross: Notwithstanding the genuine problem with energy costs for many households this video is nonsense. Whilst there are differing opinions on the internet, regarding electric lights vs candles the science proves that even incandescent bulbs are cheaper and less environmentally impacting than candles. Substitute them for LEDs and it becomes a no brainer. LEDs are far, far cheaper than candles. The article is either fake news and propaganda or the people involved are ill informed.

You may of course be right but if you have a box of candles bought previously and don’t have to buy them then it’s cheaper in the short term to use them rather than LEDs. There’s also a problem with LEDs in that the initial outlay of dosh is much higher than older bulbs. It’s that outlay of cash upfront that’s an issue when you’re on low income.

To be fair, I was wondering how it could be cheaper to use candles. Maybe they own a candle shop?

I can't believe there isn't more debate and media coverage about the cost of living crisis. It's going to be a catastrophe for working class people.

But no, it's still wall to wall coverage of who's got a minor cold ffs.

Exactly. I've no idea about the validity of this specific video, but there is a point that things become more expensive, the poorer you are. The main analogy being, if you have £50 to spend, you can buy a pair of shoes that will last. If you only have £10 to spend, you have to go cheap. In the time the £50 shoes would've lasted, you've spent £70 or £80 on shoes.

Plus, a thread on the cost of inflation rates on people with the least
