I'd bring in a completely new captain. Got to start afresh. Let Root go on breaking records without having this weight around his neck. It wouldn't be anyone in the current squad. Nobody is worth their place apart from Root on current form. I wouldn't burden Stokes with it either, and I don't like a bowler as captain. Graeme Smith was 22 when he took the South African job - it's got to be someone like that. You don't have to necessarily look at FC records either, because the best domestic talent has tried and failed - Burns, Sibley, Pope etc. I watched the Duncan Fletcher documentary and he said he went with Vaughan and Trescothick more to do with their character and personality - rather than their current FC record. He wanted people who would stand up and take their game to the next level. We need someone like that. Haven't a clue who this mythical person is though.
England captain Joe Root: "It's been a really tough tour. We've been outplayed and credit to Australia. "They deserve to win this series. Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say a team outplayed us." Why not take responsibility Joe instead of licking the Aussie arses?! You've made this Australia team look brilliant when in fact they aren't that great. Utterly pathetic and such a weak captain.
James Vince has proven himself a good captain at County level but he’s never really succeeded as an international player. Burns and Billings have captaincy experience but ……
This team goes to the West Indies pretty soon. It’s hard to think it won’t be the same group of 20 players failing again. For what it’s worth I’d take a gamble on a couple of new faces but with no cricket before then I can’t imagine anything other that the same same. The opening test line up?? Hammed Crawley Malan - captain Root Stokes Foakes Leach Broad Wood Robinson Plus add 1 batter who does well in the one dayers (bairstow or brook maybe)
I think he copes with it, in that it doesn't lessen his game. It's hard sometimes to disentangle his captaincy skills (or lack of) from the fact that all those around him have been rubbish. Is there an outstanding captain in the counry game who could take on the mantle? If not, I would leave it as it is personally.
Totally agree. The Brearley thing always makes me raise my eyebrows. No doubt he had a decent headline record of 17 wins in 31 Tests as captain but:- 1) He had a pretty darned good set of Test class players available to him - Willis and Botham with the ball were world class, credible international standard spinners and good third seamers like Old and Hendrick. Batting-wise he had untold riches of Boycott, Gooch (albeit mk1), Gower, Randall (at his absolute peak) and Botham. 2) County cricket produced more 'Test-ready' cricketers as the very top players from around the world played in it too. When you get into the 17 wins too it is a little more underwhelming. The biggest number, 5, were against Australia's third or fourth team as their team was decimated by Kerry Packer. 11 of the remaining 12 wins were at home - indeed other than the Packer-players-less Australians Brearley only 1 won Test away from home in all his time as captain. Moreover, in those days, West indies and Australia (full strength) were the only two real powers in world cricket at the time. India, Pakistan and New Zealand were nowhere near as competitive as they are these days, particularly away from home. The West Indies were by far the best team and dominantly so but Brearley never captained England in 1 Test against them, none, zilch. Lastly, his record in Australia against a full strength Aussie team with their Packer players back was 100% loss rate, played 3, lost 3!

Is this a totally stupid suggestion for Englands captaincy …. Morgan ? He could pass over white ball job to Buttler. I know it’s a different format etc but he is a brilliant captain and tactitian.
Agreed. In the IPL he captained his franchise to the final and was close to dropping himself because he was woeful with the bat.
I was thinking that as well. Morgan or Vince fir me and let Root concentrate on his batting. Especially as I don’t think Root is a very good captain anyway
By the way the Women take on the Aussie Ladies starting with the ODI's in just 4 days time - only one test match though but I expect our lasses to give the Aussies a bit more of a challenge
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.th...s-suggest-a-man-who-has-gone-as-far-as-he-can This sums Giles up perfectly, he's gone as far as he can and needs to go.
our county game is being ripped to bits, it needs a reboot and start again prioritising the 4 day game at home, then in our winter send over some guys to play sheffield shield games of course money comes into this and you cannot blame some for going for the franchise T20 cash, but if it was made clear to some of the younger players they're been selected purely for future test matches and to adapt to certain challenges they'll be better looked after going forward, don't think i've ever seen a worse ashes display than this, yes we've took some hammering over there before but there was always talent and some waiting, but we have nothing now, anderson & broad are on their way out, archer will probably resign himself to white ball cricket our future looked bleak in november, what next? lose to the windies soon then nz & india sa coming here in the summer, can't see us winning too many of the tests
I’m not sure the root of the problems is the captaincy (no pun intended). This was an Ashes our players didn’t really want, weren’t allowed to prepare for, and a tour squad without a decent opening batsman you were putting any faith in on this tour - granted though Crawley threatened to do something. Add to that the team selection being about ‘future games’ and you’ve just got an absolute car crash of a tour. The batting has been so poor I’m not sure if we’ve really seen what Root is made of as captain yet, but he’ll have definitely learnt from the experience and should be made of tougher stuff going forwards. But what’s the point when those around you so regularly wave the white flag? I’d take the L in the Windies, with Root as captain, and just pick players we have high hopes for in skill and temperament - even if they’re not quite ready or hitting the runs in county cricket. Enforce a focus on four day cricket based on future opportunities and development - basically what @Fonzie said. I do think Covid and preparation is a huge contributing factor though.
