Notts don't play Hameed in t20s. The problem is he only gets to play first class cricket in early spring and September. County cricket is broken.
There is an argument that if you can score runs in England in April and May then you should be able to on a absolute table top in Sydney.
Hopefully Bairstow can follow this up with a consistent run of form, without having his role in the team chopped and changed. The call up of Billings suggests that Bairstow will continue as a specialist batter, while Buttler will now continue as a specialist white ball player. Sadly, our best opener is probably Rory Burns, it was an odd time to leave him out having finally faced a few balls in an innings. Hameed seems incapable of getting forward beyond the batting crease and looks very much the player brought up on medium pace bowling in county cricket. Not sure what they were expecting from Crawley, having been dropped in the summer and not playing any red ball cricket since. Australia win seems the most likely result still, weather permitting. England still need another 60 or so runs to have a chance of taking enough time out of the game and Leach, Broad and Anderson are unlikely to last long enough to get those.
He's not facing Starc and Cummins in April and May. Hameed is actually starting to look afraid of fast bowling, standing virtually on his stumps and turning half volleys into very good balls.
The standard of county cricket has obviously dropped as so many international red or white ball players aren’t released to play. Burns is one of the best at County level as shown by his 6 half centuries last season. However, he is lacking at the next level when he faces international bowlers.
Burns started the summer pretty well, with a 100 and a 50 against NZ. But as soon as he goes a few weeks without playing he's gone because his technique means he needs to be in perfect rhythm to stand a chance. He's not likely to be able to get ugly runs when out of form, like Cook would often do.
England always try and find a way to keep YJB out of the test side. Then whoever plays instead of him flops and they keep going back to him. Sam Billings joining the test squad rather than flying home from his stint for Sydney Thunder. He blew a bit hot and cold for them where if he got in to the 20s with the bat he would go on and at least double it...... https://www.espncricinfo.com/player/sam-billings-297628/matches
Not sure what Billings being called up has to do with Bairstow? Particularly given Bairstow’s thumb injury
To be keeper as Buttler is ***** and also carrying a knock. Could be without both for Hobart. Cracking innings come to an end. He's in and out of the team more than anyone. Moved around the batting batting line up more than anyone. Behind the stumps then demoted more than anyone. Chucked in a rubbish side getting thrashed with no warm up match, then this test gets hundred while hurt. I think his career is underappreciated.
Eng 294 all out. 120 odd behind. If khawaja hadn't been dropped on 28 then England would be right in this game... Still can't get to 300 though!
A lot closer than I thought we would get when we were 4 down. Can’t see any real possibility of an England win. Aussie win favourite but a draw might still happen
i'm still puzzled how boland got all those wkts when wood anderson and broad put their heart and soul into the cause, really feel for mark wood too
Bairstow, Stokes and Wood. Our best three players in this test all have knocks. England have finally found the secret of doing well. It just involves players getting injured first.
Been up watching for last hour. Proper declaration bowling we look completely beaten. Expect them to declare at around 400 lead (it’s 360 as I type) which will be another half hour at this rate. Don’t fancy us batting well for 90 minutes this evening to give us any chance tomorrow.
