If this was the first time wed brought players in who weren't ready then yes I'd accept a mistake as an excuse but it's not it happens every time and the only time I'm surprised is when one turns up who is ready
Sorry! I was trying to get though to the flat earthers amongst us who seem blind to the obvious when it comes to matters related to Barnsley FC.
To be fair mate, it's not a conspiracy theory. It's an independent assessment of our finances over the past few years. Fans and owners alike always quote turnover and how much it decreases if we're relegated to League 1. What is never mentioned is how much we make from player sales in the season following a good season in League 1. It also escapes the accounts because these sales aren't included in that League 1 season, it's the following season when they make the books. The fact remains that the most money we have ever recouped from player sales are the two seasons following our latest successful seasons in League 1. In the summer of 2016 we sold Alfie Mawson for mega bucks, followed by Hourihane, Bree and Winnall in the New Year window, much of that value on the back of the reputation they built in League 1, when they simply tore the opposition apart. And we were turning down other offers left right and centre for the likes of Scowen and Watkins. In the summer of 2019 we sold Pinnock, Lindsay and Moore and would have also got a hell of a lot of money for Adam Davies had his contract not been run down. Are our owners, who run the club on a statistical model unaware of this? I would argue that they really are not. These are business men passing themselves off as billionaires and buying up clubs all over Europe with very little money down and the potential for massive profit. The money they made from Nice was astronomical while the team was nosediving with almost universal fan revolt. I would argue they are acutely aware of the profit that can be made from players who perform well at the top of League 1, but would go unnoticed whilst struggling in a team at the foot of the Championship. An alternate opinion is not a conspiracy theory. There is no conspiracy. Our owners would like to make money from the club they bought, they have never hidden this from anyone. Success on the field does not necessarily equate to making money because to achieve success in The Championship you have to spend a lot of money. To achieve success in League 1 and put your players in the shop window, you don't have to spend nearly as much which offers the opportunity to make more profit.
But you need the success in League One to ensure your players are wanted and for money that makes a difference - that’s a big gamble because the second a season in League One unravels where do you go then? Plus I don’t really see the owners as ones who won’t invest in players on the back of promotion - and without been in the Championship would they have had the audacity to take out £750k? I suspect not because they would have had other plugs to fill. It’s an interesting discussion though. My personal opinion is that they’ve recruited poorly twice now and both times Conway was at the wheel and calling the shots. The plan can work at this level but needs a strong CEO/Head Coach that will insist or find a Dike/Soll/James type to supplement a better quality of squad than we have now.
