"If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality."
Saw him speak in Birmingham before the end of apartheid. A very courageous and inspirational man. RIP Desmond Tutu.
RIP, Now Just watch the hypocrisy of our Govt who will no doubt be sending representation to his funeral.
Sad day whatever your views on religion he was a good man and courageous fighter against injustice. The world is a poorer place without him. RIP Ps what are we going to call lower second degrees now
Yep, they'll celebrate him on one hand and at the same time crame through a bill criminalising asylum seekers fleeing terror and persecution.
And not forgetting introducing new legislation to make protesting very difficult ( obviously masked in rhetoric about violent protesting)
Not sure why religion is even being mentioned to be honest. A great man who stood for goodness and truth, RIP.
Proud 'Desmond-er' here -- UCNW Bangor -- (Oceanography) -- better than a 'Thora' but not as good as a 'Geoff Hurst.'
Interestingly the 3rd was a Douglas not a Thora when I was at Liverpool in the early 80s trying to remember what a 2-1 was (I didn’t get one obviously )
Yeh but there is a feeling of 'in spite of religion', or 'whatever you think of religion' etc and I dont think it needs to be said like that, religion doesn't define him. Just appreciate the man.
Very sad news. I was privileged to speak to him for a couple of minutes in the mid 80’s after an Anti Apartheid march to Clapham Common. One of the best 2 minutes I ever spent in my life. Hugely brave and inspirational fellow. RIP.
He was the Archbishop so it’s a bit hard to ignore the religious side of him. It also gave him a position to make a difference which he took full advantage of despite great personal risk. I’m sure he would say his faith in God was an important reason for his actions. and without it I doubt he would have been so influential. You don’t have to be religious to fight against inequality or injustice. Many champions of good causes aren’t but for Tutu it was important
Would be kicked out of the modern Labour Party and called an antisemite given that he called Israel an apartheid state.
Just a good bloke. Stood for the right thing, had compassion and also had a sense of humour which endeared him to many folks I would think. Intelligent and used his religious position to continually attack the injustices of the total crap that is man's inhumanity to his fellow man. Also used his position to help a peaceful transition from apartheid to post apartheid. Top guy and will be missed by all who appreciate genuine caring blokes. If he can't rest in peace then no one can.
