Inevitable I'm afraid. Johnson is just scared of the reaction if he did it before Christmas.

Completely agree, I would be amazed if he locks down before Christmas given last year and the cheese and wine parties. However, I would not be surprised if New Year is cancelled.

Yes cos we don't have covid on Xmas day or Boxing Day but we do the day after.
Surprised that Scotland isn't holding back till after 1st January, after all nobody will get infected before that date.

Yes but we will wait until its too late for the hospitality industry to cancel any food and drink orders - If I was a betting person I would go with us cancelling everything from around the 27th probably told on Boxing day

tbf it seems sensible to give a fair bit of notice, so places don't order stuff in etc

Yes, and whatever anybody's view on restrictions, surely faffing about knowing that you'll bring them in anyway a bit later is the worst possible approach.

Now thinking nailed on 2 week lockdown starting 28th..renamed as a 'circuit breaker' to make it sound effective.
It won't have any impact, will just pack out supermarkets etc in greater numbers after the 2 weeks have passed.

Would love it if the Queen used the Xmas Day speech to announce that for one week only, before it's too late, she's taking back control.
    1) Announce there will be no lockdown.
    2) Announce that anyone who flaunts simple polite rules will be beheaded
    3) Dissolve Parliament
    4) Announce free gin

My main issue with the whole way they've been dealing with hospitality is that it's blindingly obvious that there's nobody influential anywhere near the government who has even worked in a pub or restaurant, let alone run one. Most of my orders for the last week before christmas (which covers more than a week because of xmas shutdowns) needed to be in at 14:00 on Monday, at exactly the time they were having that stupid extended cabinet meeting and deciding what to do. There's not a hospitality business in the country which doesn't do the majority of their orders on Sunday night or Monday morning - we all had to try and order for a busy christmas and an immediate lockdown simultaneously.

And I consider myself to be one of the lucky ones! The wholesalers I order from will be sitting on pallets of stock that they ordered weeks ago, and breweries will have gallons of beer in cask or keg which they now might wish they'd canned. I could probably plan around an announcement that there's going to be a lockdown in the new year, but a few rumours of it coming on the 27th doesn't count as notice for those of us who order week by week, let alone those who have to plan months in advance.

Sorry to get a bit technical, but is it the angle of the photo or am I right that those are firkins (or maybe kils, given the presumably 50l kegs behind them) with a sankey fitting?
