I mean I don’t because they’re thieves, but I can’t help feeling a little sorry for them. If they really did only use the cards to buy shopping (it doesn’t say they used them elsewhere) then they may have been extremely skint and hungry and to think for a period of time that you’ve won the jackpot and chance to turn your life around only to end up back in jail is pretty crap. I know it’s their fault, and I know I wouldn’t want the stolen card to happen to me, and that I’m an idiot, but it’s the fact it was spent on shopping that’s got to me.

I feel sorry for whoever bought the next couple of those cards legitimately, they'll never know but they should have won the money.

    With respect Jamdrop
Travelled from Bolton to london. How, if they were skint.?
    Bought 5 scratch cards. ?.
    Out on license.
Not exactly a sob story for me. Sounds more like Serial criminals.
Lots of folks on the streets that I feel sorry for. But not these 2. Nowhere does it say they were homeless. Or starving etc.

Wonder if the shop can be prosecuted for allowing someone to buy goods with the details written on a hand.
Reminds me of the old credit card fiddle before Internet banking etc.
Nick a credit card take it to a large town buy goods on the old carbon swipe machine, could run a few grand up before chucking it away.

I do not feel sorry for them one bit, they are thieves , they have a chance to turn their life around by the fact they were out on license , they could try working instead of begging & the next time I think about throwing some cash onto some ones blanket I might just wonder if the money is going to be used for scratch cards , they have done genuine people down on their luck no favours plus they have denied someone a fortune .

That’s actually an interesting thought, wonder if they could claim technically they bought the ticket if the money went out of their bank account.

How do you use a debit card when you don't have the card? Do they just key the number into the til?

‘The pair went on a four-day bender to celebrate their 'win', posting their escapades across social media. However, when trying to deposit the money to them, the National Lottery discovered that neither of the men owned a bank account and so naturally became suspicious.’

You’ve put that in quotes so I presume you read it somewhere but I can’t see that line in the article linked.

    That’s what I see.

I just quickly grabbed it from whatever story I was reading as thought it added a bit more context.
