I suspect you've never met the man. If you had, you wouldn't have written claptrap about him. I've met him several times and he strikes me as a decent, honest person who genuinely wants to improve the lives of the Barnsley populace. I'm not saying he's perfect, or unambitious, but please dont lump him in with politicians who promise the world and deliver **** all.
I like the system in Holland but surely it works because everyone knows the rules and they are the same at every roundabout. If you come to the first and only one setup like this in the UK for the first time there’s a good chance you’re going to plough into any cyclist using it.
Will be a disaster in Barnsley. They work in places like Holland because they have a cycling culture, where motorists actually respect cyclists. Stick one in tarn end, where cars are wheel spinning to get out, and it will be carnage.
Too true. I nearly knocked a cyclist off in Holland because I wasn't used to them having priority at junctions. Very lucky for both me and the cyclist that an accident didn't occur.
I think you're giving too much credit to the government if you think this is a result of some dialogue with the council. I would imagine Steve Houghton learned about the roundabout at the same time as the rest of us. And of course when he points out it's a daft idea, they'll withdraw the funding allocation and give it to someone else, all the while spinning it to suggest Barnsley is anti measures to tackle climate change.
