Poor Red Rain cops for abuse every time he posts his Minority Report/Entertainment Index and has invited others to suggest different ways of measuring entertainment.

Here is my attempt based on things I find entertaining in football matches. This is very much my own preference and I am happy to tweak it if we can come to a BBS consensus.

These are things I think are important and how I will score the matches based on stats available on whoscored.com

Goals - the number of goals scored are generally important to a game. I think we can all agree that usually a 4-3 game or 7-1 game is more exciting than a 0-0. Therefore I will multiply the number of goals by 50 as it's a pretty important factor.

Shots on target - If it's not a goal, a shot on target usually gets us up out of our seats. Multiply it by 10 as it's probably almost as entertaining as a goal.

Shots off target - This is difficult to decide whether it's entertaining or not, but a shot a couple of inches wide usually draws an ooh from the crowd, and a shot blazed over from 3 yards out usually entertains the opposition fans. Multiply it by 5.

Forward passes compared to backwards passes - Subtract the number of backwards passes from the number of forward passes to see how attacking the team has been.

Passes in the final third - tension builds as the ball is passed in and around the penalty area. Entertaining.

Successful dribbles - everyone likes a mazy run past the opposition - multiply it by 10

Successful tackles - everyone likes to see their team make a good tackle and win the ball - multiply it by 5.

Off the line clearances - just as good as a goal if it's at the right end - multiply it by 10

Dispossessions - we like to see our team win the ball back - multiply it by 5

Goalkeeper Saves - as goal line clearances - multiply by 10

Pass completion percentage - not sure about this one, but I'd say good accurate passing is entertaining.

Red cards - always add an extra dynamic to the game - usually it means there's been a gratuitous foul as well - multiply the score by 10.

Plus a win bonus of 100 points for the team that comes out on top.

Based on this, the score for last night's game was:

Compared to Barnsley vs Sheff Utd

Up to whoever wants to do this, if they want to do this obvs, but not for me.
It's entertainment, a release, light relief, all this analytical gubbins makes it feel far too close to actual work for me, get enough of that at work!

I don't take any joy out of it, I was just putting forward an alternative selection of stats with different weightings to show that what I think makes an entertaining game is different to others.

Let’s be honest how well the match went usually depends on if we won or not. Amazing how much we all wax lyrical about how players when we win yet find very little to speak off if we lose etc.

That's why the winning team gets a 100 point bonus in my system.

It’s the 3 points that make all the difference for me.

I don’t really see any issue with anyone forming an index however they see fit. Share it, I’ll read it. I’ll agree or not. All good.

My problem with Red Rain’s entertainment index isn’t the scores - it’s is his insistence that it is 100% objective and purely stats based - not formed by any opinion.

Yet the metrics were decided entirely by his opinion, so are a 100% subjective view. I find it very arrogant to assume a view or opinion is fact - or a better/more informed opinion than anyone else’s.

I hope you do not mind, but I am going to stay out of this for a while. I want to see what sort of reaction you get before I give you my views. I fear that reaction to my input would tend to overwhelm reaction to your ideas. Best of luck with it though.

The purpose of this thread was to allow people to suggest other metrics that could be measured. I went on whoscored.com and picked some out, but I just wondered if anyone thinks I've missed anything or overly weighted a particular measure. I'd like to get a BBS consensus that it is a fair reflection. I think Red Rain gets a lot of negative comments but gets very little constructive criticism as regards his index. I'm willing to put the effort in if people want to suggest another way to measure things?

I don't understand how you can factor the opposition into your own 'entertainment index'.

I get no entertainment out of the opposition scoring a goal as I support Barnsley.

These sort of metrics might work if you were a neutral watching a game, but surely your entertainment is likely heightened if you have a dog in the fight, so to speak.

By analysing data of both sides to come to a score to determine how much you enjoy a game, you're essentially suggesting that you enjoyed a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth more than a 1-0 win over Coventry, for example.

I think you have to look at your own team's score first, then compare it to the opposition. It is like watching as a neutral and I think that's why Red Rain gets criticism for not taking joy in a victory if we haven't played well.
There are plenty of people who would score the gam 500 to nil based wy on the score.

I would be putting a minus for all the opposition scores and then seeing what the net result is. Very rarely is it entertaining to see the opposition beat you in any department until you've had time to come to terms with a defeat.

It's a simple equation for me
    Barnsley win it's very entertaining
    Barnsley draw it's slightly entertaining
    Barnsley lose its not entertaining

    Excellent but I’ve got one.

    Watch the game.
If you’re leaving the ground and you get a warm feeling in yr stomach, and ….you sit through a load of crap on Questjust to see 30 seconds of the Reds, and….it’s one of the last things you think about before going to sleep and you’ve still got that warm stomachy feeling and…..when you wake up the following day and you feel brilliant just at the thought of the game then……….
    It was fckin entertaining!!!

Yes and you are getting that, I was just replying to your part about Red Rain getting pelters.

I’m not going to suggest the addition or removal of anything, because, as I said, you can include whatever you feel right, and if you share it, I’ll read with interest. I don’t have to agree with the whole system to take interest in it.

I'd probably add a "hitting the woodwork" section, excitement score similar to having one cleared off the line?

Don't think it gives that stat, but I'll have another look and add it if it does.
