If anyone wishes to trawl the archive on here they will show I've never been against Turkish accession, it in my view could be a good step forward to accept a Muslim nation....but EU leaders have been keen to court the Turks, it may have been disingenuous courting, but people are not making up stories, it's not guesswork....these were actual public statements. Angela Merkel came out publicly and offered to help speed up Turkish accession at that time. I accept she may have been lying, but it was a public statement from October 2015. https://www.euractiv.com/section/gl...ready-to-support-turkey-eu-accession-process/ https://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/oct/15/big-decisions-unlikely-migration-summit-eu-leaders
Because to serve the cause of big business the Eu would have had Turkey like a shot, a large pool of cheap labour. Did you actually read the facts I'd posted, half from the Guardian BTW. Cheap labour killing british jobs. You might be ok with this but I'm not. Now we've left we suddenly find lorry drivers/chefs/wharehouse workers are suddenly empowered to ask for a decent wage because there is no longer an over supply in the labour market. No more minimum wage, working tax credits and foodbanks to subsidise big business profits at the expense of their workers. A decent wage for newly empowered workers. I suppose you dont get that, cos you'd rather wave an EU flag cos you bought the liberal elite narrative who want cheap polish nannies, near zero tax rates for big business and massive profits for big business. Personally, I'm loving that workers suddenly have more power than at any time since the seventies.Their demands will squeeze the profits of big business and redistribute back to the people who earn it. Just awesome.
Did you not read the article? That was detailing the EU spending round in 2014-2020. That is the last couple of years not 30 years ago. The start of the requirement for additional funding was caused by the closing of heavy industry 40 years ago and the deprivation levels this caused in the subsequent decade when there was no investment to replace jobs until the area was poor enough to warrant the investment from the EU. the area was ignored by the UK governments of the era
If you look into the budgetary figures over the time we paid into the EU budget you will find we actually got more in from the EU than we paid in over the period we were members. And that income was targetted to areas in the North, Cornwall, Scotland and Wales that needed it, not the SE of England that the UK Government's capital funding allocation model favoured
You’re missing the point. No one believes that the EU is some wonderful organisation with the concerns of Brits at the forefront of its agenda. Of course the EU was responsible for the creation of jobs in other countries; sometimes at the expense of jobs here, but there’s 3 counterpoints to that: 1 the EU also helped us attract some large employers here (sometimes at the cost of jobs elsewhere in the EU). 2. It didn’t take EU money for Ford to shift production of everything pre the Transit move, car manufacturers were shrinking and moving production well before EU intervention and will continue to do so with or without EU intervention. 3 Us leaving the EU doesn’t make us immune from this, in fact it almost guarantees that we’ll be victims of more of it. And just to add further, I can understand anyone who complains about the EU being a capitalist cabal, but no one I know is stupid enough to believe a post Brexit U.K. will be a Trotskyist paradise. We’re shifting from a neo liberal centre right co op to a become a far right monetarist corrupt banana republic.
No doubt the Tories will be trumpeting "the best deal ever for this country" when they sign a trade and people movement treaty with Turkey.
I would maintain we were always net contributors but I agree they spent money in our area and that was a good thing. However it was very clear they weren't going to be doing it going forward so I couldn't reckon that in the argument as to how to vote.
Terrible decision to leave in my book. But it's dead. It's gone. SKS will not even try to resurrect it as an issue if he is still there at the next GE. Boris, however will pretend that that is Starmer's aim. That is of course if he hasn't replaced brexit with war against China as the rallying cry next time. But a question posed in some of the papers today: having parted with their past traditions and voted Tory to "get brexit done", has the spell now been broken and will those 'red wall' voters feel more okay with sticking with voting Tory next time? Boris's promises of levelling-up may all be BS, but they do at least represent a positive message.
I’d have thought that those who don’t want to accept refugees would be pleased at that and would consider it €3bn rather well spent.
No more minimum wage, working tax credits and foodbanks? Are you for ******* real? You’re either deluded or a wind up merchant. What do you think is going to happen? Really? This right wing, sorry, far right government is going to empower the workers and eat into the profits of big business? You’re a crank pal.
Ha Ha. No I'm not a crank. It is actually happening. It is a simple question of supply and demand. Ask any A level economics student what happens to price when you have oversupply. That is what was happening in our labour market. The minimum wage was not the living wage. That is why it had to be topped up with state and other aid. A reduction in supply has driven up prices (wages) in the labour market. I repeat that is a good thing
For those that say Daily Mail is pro Tory...... https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...ct-storm-Covid-Brexit-soaring-gas-prices.html
Wages might go up. For some and for now. Doesn’t improve things for them though if everything they have to buy costs more, or if nobody can buy anything as the shelves are empty as there’s not enough drivers, or workers generally. And that ‘is actually happening’. If you think the future is looking rosy for the working classes due to brexit, well, to be fair you’re entitled to your view. I very much do not.
Brexit has been built on lies if you believe the lies that come out of that racist clown Johnson's gob about Brexit (I'll just give you 1 "there will be no checks on goods between NI to GB or GB to NI and no division down the Irish sea") then I'm afraid you will stand for, egg under the cap.
