Royalists will point out that his out but will also refer to non-white people who were born in this country as Asian...
There’s a few things in there. 1. My fundamental point was; even though there are many people in the North of England who might be described as ‘Cap doffers’ (God and Queen and Country and love the fact they are subservient to Westminster/Whitehall who would be horrified at the idea of a more federal England) I think there would be enough people in the area who would say ‘enough is enough’ if the UK was made up of England and (the West of England- Wales if there’s a Rugby match on). Either we get ‘proper’ devolution and more control over our lives or……. we go the way of the Scots. Let’s call it ‘take back control’ but not the same nonsense slogan that was used in the Brexit debate, but far more say and control in the day to day decisions that effect people’s lives. That new federal structure would negate your (genuine) fear of perpetual Tory control to a large extent because the power invested in WestminsterWhitehall is heavily diluted. And that’s my fundamental point: it is a nonsense trying to govern a population of 60m plus by having two blokes sat behind a desk in Westminster - and that is the current system. 2. As importantly you really can’t continue to force the Scots/Irish to buy into this Brave new World as envisaged by the English. The Scots are on a different political/social path; more inclusive, community based, and sooner or later they will understandably want to leave this sh|tshow. Don’t get me started on what an affront to democracy is the state of Northern Ireland, 3.I take your point about the likelihood of Tory rule in England but that’s not guaranteed. It’s not that long ago that Labour was polling more votes in England alone and had twice the number of seats in England as the Tories. In any event, it’s the choice of the English to vote Tory or otherwise. That’s ‘democracy’! And on that last point, when the English were given the choice of a more democratic voting system they said “no thanks, we like the bent one!” You can’t expect other nations in the UK to keep going along with that line.
You can be born in the UK and still be ethnically Asian, or Afro-Caribbean. You can’t be ethnically German.
How the bloody hell should I know? super tyke & I, are available for panto, by the way. It does go on a bit..
The BBC (in 2014), JK Rowling, Blair and Brown, all pro-Remain but anti-Scottish independence. I think OP is completely wrong.
Timely OP. Was having a discussion this morning with an elderly gentleman (who voted for brexit), who was telling me he would be extremely upset if the union broke up and Scotland got their independence. Started showing me lots of clippings he'd saved from the Express showing how it would not be in their financial interest to become independent. Seemed a bit taken aback when I mentioned to him that that was exactly the same argument that failed to stop brexit, and that he ought to come to terms with the fact that in the end they will probably vote on emotional arguments such as 'take back control' as he did in the referendum. I'm afraid the irony was completely lost on him.
Apart from the ‘once in a lifetime vote’ where they chose to remain, your point is pretty much on the money
That though was a conscious political decision by the 'Stronger in' Campaign to imitate the success of 2014. Whether it was right or not then didn't matter to them, it was only about winning.
It’s the Royal family - it literally exists only because of lines of descendency. And the ‘Windsor’s’ are German, and to ensure they kept it up, our Queen married a German. And it’s not just Albert; Victoria’s first language was German, having been raised by her German mother, though her dad was British. In their defence; about 3/4 of all Europe’s remaining royal families come from a relatively small area in Bavaria. Attempting to deny our Royal family’s German heritage is to deny history and logic. Our dear Queen is as English as Christmas trees and Rucksacks
Alternatively…. Why is it that most SNP voters want out of the union but back into Europe…. Don’t they realise their hypocrisy?
Up until the First World War the German Saxe Coburg family/dynasty was happy to use that name as the royal family. When they thought it might be detrimental to their longevity, being at war with Germany and all, they changed their name to Windsor, which they thought sounded very English. For no other reason. Now if you’re telling me that a German family changing its name to an English one somehow makes it English, you’re right. But we all know that it doesn’t.
Problem is, Scotland voted to remain in the EU. Against their will, they were taken out. If shoe were on the other foot, I'd absolutely want another independence vote.
