Had one of these in our garden today.
Quite a sight especially if you're wary of hornets and wasps, but apparently these are harmless. He was sucking away at our flowers quite happily. I wish I could have taken my own photo but he was buzzing all over the place !!
About an inch long so at first sight you wouldn't want to cuddle him.

Never seen one before. Love to see new creatures and trying to identify them. Great satisfaction when I do.

Do you actually see these big boys or the small hoverflies that buzz around your flowers in summer, the ones that look like tiny wasps?

The small hover flies. I saw something weird last week though... a large wasp sort creature but it wasn't black and yellow. It was red and yellow?

    Sounds like a proper hornet.

In the 1980's the company I worked for acquired a second hand portakabin...I've no idea where it came from but it had the biggest nastiest looking wasp/hornet type thing I've ever seen...it was in excess of 50mm ( although fear may have influenced my estimate) and basically was just brown...it flew quite slowly but I've never managed to identify it.

I saw something similar in the back yard about 3 months ago. I googled it but nothing resembled it. A brown wasp.

That certainly has a look of it...it was a big nasty looking bleeder...put it this way 10 blokes sat outside eating their snap in winter rather than go in the cabin,
