Many seem to think we need another centralee midfield player, yet isn't that what Herbie Kane is supposed to be? Of course the trouble is he seems injury prone and his barnsley career as a result never seems to have got going. What exactly is the 'injury' he has an when if ever is it going to be sorted. Surely he must be as flustrated as anyone yet we don't get any mention of his progress or lack of it.
Give him a chance. He just needs time and some luck with injuries. To put flop signings into perspective, Isaac Christie-Davies signed in the same window
I think it would do him good to go out on loan, even if it's a short term thing till January. Iv still got high hopes he will come good for us.
Agreed on the first point, however can't really compare with ICD. One cost £1m or so, one was free (I think) and signed for the development squad.
There was always a danger signing players before a head coach was appointed would result in this happening. Val didn't fancy him or Davies and neither has Schopp.
I don't think he was signed for the development squad https://www.barnsleyfc.co.uk/news/2020/september/icd-signs/ I suspect that while he wont be a top earner at the club, he's probably going to be on too much for somebody that is in the u23s while we bring on two defenders to play midfield.
Most of our bigger signings have been some of our how most underwhelming in their careers with us so far. Luke Thomas Herbie Kane Patrick Schmidt (who probably given us more in return than the other 2)
Kane ICD were both from Liverpool. You'd think in an ideal world that would have been our central midfield pairing. Obviously it hasn't transpired that way. It would be good to see any player we gave a long term contract to actually play for us though.
They do as a rule but there will always be some where it doesn't work out and that is the downside to this way of recruitment.
Thought Kane had an excellent game in the win at Bournemouth and I started to think he'd make a player for us. He got injured straight after and has barely been seen since. Think he needs a run of games but with his poor injury record it's hard to see that happening. If we bring in another midfielder this window it wouldn't surprise me if we didn't loan him out.
Fair point, but he'd barely, if ever, played a game of first team football when he joined. There was definitely no expectation we'd see him any time soon. Also don't think he was signed with much expectation, the complete opposite of Kane.
I wouldn't loan him out, even if we bring another midfielder in. Palmer regularly needs replacing in a 3-4-3, so I think we need 4 CMs in the squad to cover for injuries, suspensions or potential change in formation.
Genuine question, as I don't know, did Kane have a poor injury record at Donny? Or is it just since he joined us? The other point about players coming good - eventually - why do they always do so as they enter the last year of their contract? It's OK signing them on longer deals than we used to, but when they only turn into world beaters in Year 4, it doesn't give us the bargaining power we initially hoped for.
Not really the then head coach just never rated/gave Alex game time in his proper position. I do think kane will come good though just hard for him to get into center midfield at the minute with Palmer and Benson playing well that said they both only seem to last 45 minutes so hopefully kane is back fit soon to prove himself.
No, I wouldn't either but it wouldn't surprise me if we did to save a bob or two. We seem to put a fair bit of faith in Moon and Halme in midfield which worries me, particularly in Halme's case.
