The logic falls at been glad Italy won. Did you not see the Belgium & Spain games? They did the exact same as us
It was a great achievement for the Taffs to qualify (well done Giggsy) and they did very well to get to the last sixteen. Haven't heard a word of criticism about the players/Rob Page/ performance. England had a very successful tournament - getting to the finals a huge achievement. And in Gareth Southgate England have an excellent manager. What is there to whinge about?
Him getting suspended was probably the best thing that could have happened for Wales. Poor manager, awful man.
strange reply to my post! Giggs did an excellent job as manager as his record shows. He is very involved in various Charities in the Principality and much respected. I would never be arrogant enough to make any judgemental comments about his personal life - be they proven or unproven!
Spot on, this. If we had dared we would have won. So disappointed we let Italy off the hook. Southgate has done a great job and can continue to do so - just a little more adventure, please Gareth.
Is he much respected? I can't find an ounce of respect for a bloke who shagged his brother's wife for several years and also abused the legal system to cover up another affair. I'm not passing judgment on the most recent allegations against him until they're proven (other than to say it was the right decision to suspend him in the circumstances I feel). I don't think it's "arrogant" to label him an utter tw*t.
an even stranger (and more irrelevant! ) post. I'll stop because you're coming over as a bit of a tw*t.
Not really, you implied I was arrogant for having a view on his personal life and/or that I was basing my thoughts on unproven allegations.
I like Southgate as a person but he needs to be a little braver. It’s a difficult balance and it feels like both him and we are moving in the right direction.
Knee jerk stupid binary reaction. Second in Europe is terrible, first in Europe is amazing. There’s no middle ground with some people. You’re probably one of those haters who have been down on Southgate and the England team since day one, but as we got to the final you were forced to dhow some pretence of patriotism. Boy were you glad when we lost (humiliated in a 1-1 drubbing by a team many thought were light years ahead) so you could revel in being right about being wrong.
I think Gareth will be gutted that we didn't go for the kill when we had Italy on the ropes but I suppose it's a learning curve for him as well as the players and like you say we are definitely going in the right direction so probably best to take it as a very harsh lesson learned.
Just this. He has built a real team spirit and organisation into the team and they drew a European Final. Personally I think he is a bit too defensive but I don’t know that if we attacked more we wouldn’t lose more It’s hard to knock getting to the final
One thing that has been too obvious when listening to some England fans, is that there was a complete disrespect for how good a side Italy are/were. Like we should have steamrolled them and it was ours to lose or that Italy being on top was all our own doing. It’s easy to say we’re too defensive or too cautious, but despite Phillips and Rice having unbelievable tournaments, player for player I think we were outmatched in the middle and needed the protection they gave against the counter. Pickford only made one save all night and with better decision making we’d have got another goal. We could have backed our attacking players to outscore there’s but it could have turned in to Ossie Ardilles football. Like you say, it’s easier to point and say attack more but we just don’t know if that strategy would have got us as far.
You can’t knock his record in major tournaments, Italy didn’t deserve to win , their keeper saved the same number of pens as ours and got lucky with Rashford hitting the post . Their goal was lucky as well and Chiellini should have walked for the Saka foul , in fact Italy fluked it and were very lucky against Spain in the semifinals
