No not really. Its about recognising progress when you see it. We lost on penalties in our first final since 1966 against the best team in the tournament.
the thing that let us down was the adrenaline rush, but we were beaten by a better side, mr southgate has done us proud
I am 50-50 on this one, if we'd won on penalties then Southgate would be hailed as a great technician, playing young kids in pressure situations and winning etc, he'd have been a hero. In my view giving such responsibility to those 3 players who missed was a mistake. Hundreds of millions watching, overhyped all week, immense pressure, and 2 of them on the pitch only for minutes. Little wonder they failed, despite Pickford's best efforts at keeping us in it. Grealish and Sterling, even Shaw and Philips would have been better bets. Great credit to the team, they've done us proud...unfortunately a tactical error cost us. Lots to look forward to and I hope those who missed quickly get over it and continue to progress
Southgate surrendered the initiative after an early goal in the same way he did in the 2018 world cup semi he didn't react quickly enough to Italy taking control he didn't learn from 2018 when Croatia did the same. He then confounded the error with the penalty shootout especially allowing a 19 old to take the last one and if that was because more senior players stepped back they should be ashamed of themselves.
Players miss penalties all the time. It happens. Deal with it and accept that it's a face of life. Not worth getting so angry over
Half cut... hopefully you ll realise in the morning the lads did their best. No I've never been prime minister but I have been involved in penalty shoot outs at a much lower level and I know it's not as easy as you seem to think. So to some degree I have some logic
I’m disappointed that we lost not giving it a proper go in the 2nd half and extra time. There was no reaction to Italy’s growing momentum and we should have brought on grealish and rash Ford to keep possession.
Good point there, when Grealish came on the momentum changed and we looked a lot more threatening, Italy targeted him for some rough treatment (and he duly obliged) but I can't figure out why Rashford and Grealish didn't come on very much earlier
But we were outplayed / outthought by Italy, who it seems to me don't have better players. Does their left back hardly get a kick for Chelsea? Progress it may be, but it's small beer compared to Italy's progress, who didn't even qualify for the last tournament. We had every game at home bar one, and Scotland were as good as us in one of those games. We had the luck of the draw too. We got to the semis of the last World Cup. A lot of these players have a deal more experience now. This was our chance and I don't think we've made the best job of taking it.
I appreciate how hard it is I really do. I think my frustration is made worse by the fact I called both. When Rushford started stuttering in the rub up I said he's missed before he did. And half the pub said Saka was going to miss the poor lad looked terrified. Even if he wanted to take it he shouldn't have been put down as number 5 imo. I also didn't like the idea of bringing two players on just to take a penalty. Now of course that's all easy to say now but I genuinely did say and think all this as things were unfolding, before the event so to speak. So naturally I feel a extra level of disappointment and frustration. Do I think I know more about Football than Southgate? Of course not, but I do think he made some calls tonight that didn't give us our best chance of winning. It's incredibly fine margins and I am honestly proud and impressed by what we have done.
You bunch of miserable gits. I've just sat with my lad who is absolutely distraught and said to him; If I'd been disappointed in him after this game would he have been upset. We've agreed that they all want to win a trophy, but they also want to do everyone proud. Difficult to accept, but they have played really well. Really enjoyed the tournament.
Do you think the manager chooses who takes a penalty? The players put themselves forward. They earn the right to make history one way or another.
Fair do's....I agree with you about saka, he looked lost when he came on . I'd have picked him to start!!! It's so disappointing but when penalties come around those that stand up take them.... Southgate, I'm sure knows that better than anyone.. I just think overall Italy were stronger so although disappointed I don't feel robbed.
Way I see it!... 19 year old kid had the balls to go for it whereas "elder statesmen" if you like , had no arsehole!! Sterling springs to mind!!
