The Secret Italian is one of the best restaurants in Barnsley. It's booked up for months in advance. At weekends for over a year. I reckon I'll get in on Sunday....
I went once and I'll not be going back. Booked it for our anniversary, got mid way through our first course and the owner came up to us and asked us to leave as a party had turned up and they'd double booked. After a heated discussion I agreed that we'd leave after our main as we'd obviously booked the table first but the other party just loomed over our table and watched us eat (it's a really small room), instead of just waiting outside. Really uncomfortable experience. I do know that the vast majority of people go and have a great time though.
The overwhelming majority of people love it though, so I think we must have just been really unlucky.
Didn't feel worth it, so we drove to Morrisons bought a tiramisu and ate it in the car with plastic spoons. Best bit of the night
I'd have looked them in the eyes all seductively each mouthful, like I was listening to some M and S advert or Nigella Lawson.
Thats awful, what made the other lot better than you? They should have refunded you for the disappointment and hassle!
Whilst not denying that the experience of the previous poster is extremely poor form, having visited this place twice I kinda feel someone needs to provide some balance. They have two tables, one if it's a bigger party. The owner prepares a fresh menu every day to cater for those two bookings. Home cooked Italian food, excellent quality. She then charges next to sod all for it when her customers would probably be happy to pay double. She's definitely in it for the love and joy of catering, because I've no idea how it pays the bills. I would recommend it to anyone in an instant. The behaviour described above seems very out of character for someone I experienced to be a really lovely and welcoming owner. Really surprised to hear it!
I did say twice that overwhelmingly people enjoy it and don't have a bad word to say about it. The owner was visibly upset by what happened and was very apologetic, we were probably just very unlucky.
