With Mowatt running his contract down and going for free should we have sold him a year ago when his value then must have been around £2-3m. (Ignore COVID please for this discussion) If a playerdoesn't sign a contract extention with a year left then sell or was it Mowatts input last year that was worth £2 m alone so last season was worth letting him go for free or would no one have paid anything for him last year anyway and he is only a decent transfer target when he is a free?
He was already effectively out of contract at the end of last season, but we activated an option to extend a year.
No, I’m glad they didn’t sell, he been a valuable player and shows the club won’t sell at any cost. Hopefully it sends a message to players and clubs
I dont mind players moving on but going for free grates a bit. We should be bringing money in for players who want out of our wage struucture and re investing it.
You are right foresight and hindsight is difficult, opinions and personal thoughts on ther other hand are quite simple.
No I don't think so. We did that with Connor when we 'needed' the money moreso - and it was viewed as a 'we'll never know' regarding the playoffs that year. This time round, we gave it a good go and ultimately failed. But we raised our profile as a club which will hopefully attract better players and coaches in the future and help us push on. If we're seen as a top half/playoff side, then we're more attractive than a relegation battler. In theory.
No. By keeping him we ended up in a position where we had a 1 in 4 shot at promotion. That is worth far more than £2m.
No. The money we would have got for player with less than 6 months remaining on a contract would have been minimal, meaning that we would be without the club captain for half a season for little financial gain. It's always easier and cheaper to recruit in the summer too, so more chance of finding a decent replacement...
Bang on. Back then it felt like we sold a chance at the prem for a couple of million. This time we kept the team together and wasn't it brilliant to be a part of?
If we'd sold him last year. This board would have been on meltdown. Some quoting nowt less than £5/10m. Also the player himself would have had the last shout. On whether to leave or hang around. Which happened. given the statements he was putting out. No pressure was put on him to sign a new deal. That would help no-one.
I just don't think he or Adam Davies before him owed the club anything. We'll get bugger all for Miller and he's not performed at all for the first team.
It shouldn’t grate because it’s not difficult to acknowledge and balance how important he was to our fantastic season and what a great season personally for him. Whatever we paid for him, he was here 4 and a half years ( according to his departing message) and at least 3 of those he was very good
We did the right thing. There is less bairning on here this week than there would have been had we sold in January that’s for sure
No, I don’t think we should’ve sold him. One thing I do think the club need to do, is change these release clauses for new head coaches so they are only active after the second season. If a potential coach is concerned with how he’ll leave the club, before even joining us, then they can do one.
Do they intend replacing him gonna leave us short. They had a manager lined up what about the captain?
Thats the point i was after, so without Mowatt we probably we wouldnt have achieved the same position last season even by re investing the money in to the squad. Im not sure if i agree or not yet.
