Did they try golden goal and silver goal together. If the goal was scored in the first half of extra time they played on until half-time and the team that scored was the winner. If they scored in the second half of extra time the game was over? Memories hazy it was probably one or the other.

Personally I thought there was more drama / excitement for the penalties than normal and extra time added together.

I fell asleep during extra-time. Laura woke me up for snoring too loudly on the sofa. So I went to bed missing the penalty shoot-out.

I don't remember that. I remember them trying the golden goal, then when it didn't work went to the "silver" goal where if a team was winning at half time in extra time they won, but not the two together. Again, my memory is shocking so may be wrong...

Given the importance of penalty shootouts, I'm surprised they are not used more in our normal game. Imagine after every draw you have penalties to determine who gets 2 and who gets 1 point. I'm sure I've seen a similar system in some countries.

I quite like a penalty shootout. As long as it’s not England or Barnsley..
96 Euros had the golden goal. If Gazza has reached that tap in, we would have beat the Germans. Instead.. :(

Did I dream Anderton hitting the post too?

Problem was that in practice 'not conceding' was more important than 'trying to score'.

    Generally it was tedious.

It's extra time they ought to sack off.

So reduced likelihood of Collins heading the ball near the halfway line, I see why that would be less entertaining :)

Is it a penalty if the goalie fouls him ?

Nothing like the drama of a penalty shoot out. A great mixture of skill, bottle and luck.

No! Nothing wrong with keeping a draw as it is!

Why not have the penalty shootout BEFORE the match? Then if it's a draw near the end of extra time, the team that lost it will have to go for it instead of both playing for the shootout?

    I've said this for years.

I’d keep them, last night was brilliant viewing for a neutral, not even Robbie Savage could spoil it with his ‘commentary ‘.

I'm surprised Adam Hinchcliffe hasn't come up with a solution to replace penalties. His ideas are usually golden so it's sure to be a winner.

We should keep it as it is. Don't like penalties? Well make sure you win before then.
