Totally forgot about the fight but it was good - all things considered - to wake up and find out he won his fight last night. Britain's first (and only the sixth ever) undisputed world champion in the four-belt era is some achievement especially after only 18 fights. I hope he gets the recognition and respect he deserves for this accomplishment.
He’s done fantastically well. Only 18 pro fights and now four belt world champion. I went to see him in his early fights and it was clear he had real class. He’s a tough lad too but most folk from the Pans are, East Lothian’s own mining community.
I had a go at staying up for it but it was never going to happen after being out from 2pm. He’s a phenomenal talent and this was a stunning win as Ramirez is tough and had never been floored or in trouble before. But scores of 114-112 on all three scorecards means he only won five rounds doesn’t it? Shows you how important those knockdowns were, or (without having seen the fight) how poor the judging was. Nice homecoming fight later in the year and then either Lopez stepping up to 140 or Taylor going up to 147. The record of his last six opponents combined is something ridiculous like 160-1
Outstanding to do all of it in just 18 fights & he’s beaten proper fighters. Prograis & Ramirez are top quality & I’d expect them to win world titles in the future & Baranchyk & Postol were world class fighters when Taylor beat them. 3 of them were unbeaten with Postol’s only loss been to Terence Crawford. I hope he becomes a superstar. He deserves it.
There were about 4 genuinely close rounds that could’ve gone either way & the judges have pretty much gave them all to Ramirez with them scores. Taylor definitely deserved to win but he got on the back foot & tried boxing & moving for the last 4 rounds & it almost cost him. I don’t know whether he was just tired or it was strategy from Davison but it didn’t work.
Just saw this interview which was my point. Every report I read said he was a deserved winner but razor tight scorecards.
Got to make the SPOTY short list. He's gone under the radar but will hopefully get far more publicity and make himself a lot of cash.
