Great to be in the play off spots. Great to not being near a relegation spot. Great to have loads of points. Great to have a fit, hard-working team. Great to have a manager who seems really passionate. All great. However, there is a trade off. The football on the eye is NOT entertaining. It's not. If one equates the footy on show with entertainment then that is one's right but, perhaps, it's confusing entertainment with league position and assuming both are mutually identical. Even if I'm wrong on that last point the entertainment provided this year has not consistent nor even persistent. There have been individual items of brilliance and flash in the pan 'wow's, and occasionally I must say, some slick football, but in the main the viewing has been uninspiring and dull. The only thing that has negated and nullified this has been the fact that the reds have picked up lots of points from press, energy and a drive to keep the opponents away from our own goal. The energy has indeed been terrific and all need to be congratulated for their efforts. The entertainment though has, in the main, been in watching or players running around, working hard and keeping the ball away from our own goal. Again, to me that is not really entertaining. Others may view that differently. No-one wants the Reds to play well and lose all the time. No-one wants to see the Reds in a relegation battle and everyone wants the reds to do as well in the league points wise but there IS a trade off. The Reds are doing really well points wise but are not entertaining. N.B. I also do not expect the Reds to be Barcelona just as the early 80's team and the Premier League team weren't Barcelona
If anything, today showed exactly why Ismael has us playing direct and ‘hoofball’ at times. Attempts to pass the ball today were either laboured, inaccurate or both.
You’ve done really well here to try and say ‘each to their own’ in terms of having an opinion, but also said things as if they’re a matter of fact - NOT entertaining being the obvious one. Means I’m a little confused on whether I can offer an alternative view or not or just have to accept your opinion. To be clear though, I’m not confusing our league position with entertainment and assuming they’re mutually identical.
Fair do's I just mean, really, that I'm happy with the points but I dont like the football. But if I'd have just said that without explaining the reasoning I'd have had more of a critique. I just dont like what I see and running around and closing down isnt great for me. Again, others may differ if that's not a cop out statement
I love em running around and closing other teams down I love em playing around their final third I love em clearing it from the back rather than arsing around with it I don't love em kicking it forward vertically and aimlessly when there's no need to. Which happens all the time.
Not the most entertaining football we have seen by a Barnsley team by a long stretch, but its also put us in with a chance of achieving something not many Barnsley teams including some fantastic players have ever got close to.
It’s a fair opinion. We’ve had some unbelievably dross 45 minute spells of football this season. But in the main I do find it entertaining and it’s a lot more than running around really fast and working hard. Not always our own doing though and a lot of the time it’s as if we give the opponent a free ride on their contribution to how it plays out. I give Coventry nothing but credit today whilst also saying that’s by no means one of our dross performances. It wasn’t great, but with success comes expectation and the bar is now a lot higher due to our league position.
in the main I do find it entertaining and it’s a lot more than running around really fast and working hard. Thats the crux. I dont find it entertaining. It's nice to see the wins and the grinding performances that lead to those wins
I know I said I wouldn't watch the highlights reel but I did anyway. If Dike and Woodrow stick their easy chances away and Frieser squares it we win that game.
Ifs and buts Stephen. Didn't get that feeling that they thought they'd win it right from them walking on the pitch. Hopefully this changes come Wednesday.
If anything it will be more difficult. Huddersfield look to be getting their finger out other than their mauling v Norwich.
I think part of the reason the football might not feel entertaining is because most of us are watching it on a laptop. While we might not be knocking it about in quite the same style as the Wilson Brazil side, I guarantee if we were in a packed out away end turning teams over most weeks, or part of 15k in Oakwell in the sunshine, having had a couple of beers in the pub beforehand, winning more games than we were losing, it’d feel like the greatest season in 20 years. Which to be honest, it is.
I've enjoyed the football too at times. It just infuriates me when we hoof it down field when there is a simple ball on. Why gift the opposition the ball needlessly. I'm amazed we haven't conceded more late goals from lack of possession. Also when we're well on top of a team it would add to our goal tally. I think there have been lots of occasions we've needlessly shut up shop because of our style. Wycombe being the biggest example.
I love so many wins, the league position but most of all the reactions of teams after we've played them and beat them.
I totally agree with you , watching live at the ground is a totally different experience than watching a game from an empty stadium via a match streaming , the football comes across totally different & therefore your match day enjoyment is a totally different experience , imagine the fact that we have come from behind on at least four occasions to win games with the crowd urging the team on followed by the euphoria following the winning goals & the final whistle , your image of what you have watched could be totally different from watching under current circumstances .
Football in general is becoming less entertaining with Prem teams going from an attacking position back towards there keeper just to keep possession then another 2/3 mins passing it abart whilst an opportunity for a ball through a set defence appears, its crap in my opinion most of the time.
