OK, understood. Obviously if we get £10 Mill for a player and can re-invest most of that with two/three - ideal
I can see a definite progression by the club in the transfer market. We used to be limited to transfers of around £250,000 - £500,000. Now we're bringing in players for in and around the million pound bracket. The key is to sell those for what they're worth and step up to £2 -3 million replacements. Our only problem is wages but that would be aided by the larger amounts of money coming into the club with better transfer deals. It's a chicken and egg and you only need a few duffers like Schmidt and Thomas to scupper it.
Every signing can't always be a hidden gem though mate. It isn't a magic conveyor belt It has always been thus.

I'm hoping progression will lead to a point where our best players don't think that their best route to playing in the Premier League is via the likes of Stoke or other mid table Championship teams.
Tin hat on here. I'd like to get to the point where hanging onto Woodrow and Mowatt depending on where our season goes doesn't effect our progression. I think we're slowly getting there.
I don’t think the route is as important as the money to them. Look at Scowen as an extreme example of a player that has worked his way into league one and probably still earning more than at Barnsley. They’re all about money and we don’t pay the wages that others do.
I think it's been more of a factor before, but if you look at some of the clubs in the Championship now, I'm not sure the 20k+ wage offers will be too forthcoming. Boro averaged 14k/week, including the last of the big Premier League earners that they're taking off the wage bill. Preston have just decimated their team. Stoke have been looking to get players out after bringing a load in during the summer, Millwall wouldn't go near our asking price for Mowatt in Jan. For the likes of Styles and Helik in particular, they would be crazy to sign for anybody outside the Prem, unless it's for one of the relegated teams.
Problem is they don’t have to offer as much as was offered to Hourihane or Winnall to turn their heads. I would imagine a wage of 10k a week would easily out trump us. Some of these clubs might be cutting back, but will still have a far bigger budget than us. I agree we shouldn’t be selling our best players to yer Prestons & Millwalls at this level, and you wouldn’t expect our players to see them as a upwards move, especially after this season.
I suspect we've offered Mowatt at least that. And if we can be smart about which players we sell, we would be able to offer that to a few others as well. Imagine Woodrow is already on more than that.
There's a few that just need off loading if they can't get new clubs that will reduce the wage bill. George Miller being one of them.
I agree with the post that there possibly isn't the money around that there was. Crowds might only form part of a revenue but it's still a hefty cut for a lot of clubs. The relegated clubs from premier League seem to concentrate on keeping a squad together. Also I can't help wondering if the penny is starting to drop for the owners that the prem (and it's huge income) is a possibility. If this squad was kept together we'd have another crack next year.
Could our biggest bargaining chip in Contract Talks be the fact that Big Val is staying? He's the one we need to nail down imho!
Definitely. I'd say if we can come up with a plan that satisfies the coach in terms of our progression, that will hold a lot of weight with the players.
No matter where we finish it`s been a great season, especially after last season & the way we started this.I hate to say it but i don`t think we will get a better chance than this for a long while if we don`t manage to go up this time with these players, some of which may not be with us next season.
Would be nice to know what they’re on, but I doubt we will find out. I doubt anyone at Bfc is on 10k a week or more, but you might be right. Only the board and players know tbf.
Totally agree. In an ideal world we replace Mowatt if we aren't promoted and kick on again. I doubt it will be that simple.
Two websites here claiming to be ITK https://salarysport.com/football/sky-bet-championship/barnsley/ And https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/footballleaguefc.com/barnsley-2019-20-player-wages/
Yup, it’s never that simple. Sold our 2 centre backs last season and almost dropped like a stone and it cost us a manager. This team has taken all last season and the summer transfer window to get going, plus another change of manager to get the best out of it.
