Which is the same as we achieved in 16/17 under Hecky. We need one more point for our best return at this level since 2000, and 24 points to equal our total under Bassett.
Once we sold Hourihane and Winnall I think we just sort of gave up and fell backwards. Keeping them would have been a gamble on trying to make the play offs. Rightly or wrong we didn't gamble, I said at the time we should have at that point just sold everyone.
We were still picking up points after winnal left after conor and bree went we won 3 league games from 18 and we still had a quite decent team.
Agree it was a very decent team but without our best two players the outside shot at the play offs fell away and I feel we lost motivation. Decisions like not selling Watkins and letting him leave for free were baffling to me as we had basically decided to take the money rather than gamble. That's just how I remember it. I agree we should have got more points but it just really felt like everyone was deflated by the departures
I sort of understood why we sold winnall and conor, winnall forced a move to x his wages fivefold. Conor asked to leave we offered to make him the highest-paid player in bfc history he still said he wanted to go. Our then owner who bought the pair with his own money was terminally ill trying to sell the club. And if we had made the play offs and kept our players fulham beat us twice convincing that season with our best players so I would have been a big gamble.
Just shows the difference in finances between then and now doesn’t it? Back then we could still buy a top player like Hignett, Dyer & Shipperley. How much would those guys cost us in today’s market?
