Three of those Barnsley players were big favourites of my late Father. Gavin Smith, Jimmy Baxter and Johnny Kelly. He always said Kelly was the best Barnsley player he'd ever seen, until he saw Ronnie Glavin.

Just for the set, my Grandad adored Jimmy Baxter.

Wasn't it Baxter that needed his leg amputating due to some pitch fertilizer (?) getting in an open wound? Or have I mixed him up with someone else?

On a side note, I believe the Downie for BPA was Johnny Downie who had a decent career at Man U. After football, he came back to Bradford and had the paper shop at the end of the road I was born. We would go in as schoolkids and although he was a nice man, he never spoke of football.
Imagine even the most average Man U player in the modern day retiring to run a Newsagents?

once saw Gavin Smith score direct from a corner...he was more surprised than anybody as he always just seemed to toe poke the ball in the right direction. Against Millwall, I think, goalkeeper Finlayson.

Many years ago, went to a cuptie at Huddersfield, Jimmy Baxter lobbed the goalkeeper late on to score the winner.

Likewise with my Dad, as well as George Robledo, who I think left for Newcastle in 1949.

Just to add to that,Former Red Beaumont Asquith or Bo, owned a Grocery shop on Doncaster Road, Stairfoot ( Now Cardoman Lounge) As a kid I used to work for him, Weighing Tayties, fetching pop in from the outside store etc. Also used to take his Greyhounds for walks. His friend and former Red Jackie Harston ran a newsagents on Doncaster road nearer to Tarn,

I’ve mentioned this on here before, but one more time......My first paper boy job was with Jack Harston in the early to mid 1960s. I only lived two minutes away, at the bottom of Cemetery Road so it was handy. Five shillings a week, I think, which was almost slave labour. He had no time for the Reds despite being an ex-full back at Oakwell. He was always on at me to switch to his team - the mighty Owls who were a pretty decent First Division team at the time. His stock phrase (he told me often ) was that winger David Ford was worth more than the whole of BFC put together, and that included the ground as well. He was probably right but I didn’t want to hear it obviously.

I often had to miss the end of matches on Saturday to get back in time to deliver the evening papers. We kicked off at 3.15 in those days
