I probably spent my first 3/4 yrs (1966/70) on the Ponty/kop (depending on the way we were kicking.) And in all honesty. If you’d have not said what it was, I’m not sure how long it would have taken for me to recognise. I wouldn’t have struggled with the other 3 sides mindst.
Yes, my mate and I used to stand on the ponty on Saturday afternoon after coming straight from the Pit with the old black rings around the eyes we used to call it mascara.
Can't believe how small it looks in that photo! Seemed absolutely huge when you were a young 'un. I started on that far corner, with my dad & grandad in about 1972. Allowed in the Ponty with mi mates when I got a bit older. Always thought that one escape door along the back of the stand was asking for bother - it was a bit of a flashpoint for away fans chancing their arm in the home end. West Ham and Bradford two such occasions from memory., Miss it massively, but we'll never see it again...
Suddenly feel very homesick . Used to go through the middle bit and stand at the barrier just to the right three quarters of the way up the terrace
And the smell of beer and pipe tobacco drifting around the crowd. She was my first love too, however, she treated me pretty badly in the early 70's. Taking me for granted, filling my weekends with disappointment and depression, making me cold and shivery and offering no protection, even going so far as to make a trip to the toilet a health hazard! Still, like any star struck first-time-love youngster, I missed her company when we were apart, and there were of course the odd moments of explosive passion but unfortunately few and far between. Still, I'm glad I stuck with her all these years, she's got a new coat, a new look, and treats people better than she used to, but I still miss that unique experience of being on the 1970's Ponty when Barnsley scored a goal. Yeah I know, maudlin owd git
1969 my first leave from the Navy. In the days when you had to wear uniform. Nothing I had in civvies fitted me after 3 months so went to the match in full rig. Stood by the first post closest to the Ponty end. Caps off as some idiots were discussing relieving me of it.
What a fantastic photo. Thank you. Do you know I 'welled up' when I saw it! It's the 'classic' Ponty as well - before they punched the holes in the back wall.
I was standing in there many years ago when the half time draw was made for the supporters "draw". Can't remember the name of it but you paid in £2 a week/month. My name was announced and i had won £1000. It was at the time i was buying my first house so the cash came in very handy !
Just as ah remember it, sometimes used to run along west lower as it is nah and wait at tunnel for players coming out and shout Alreyt to see who answered or waved.. Lvd it
