That’s actually scary. My experience of facebook over the last few years is that people don’t like to have genuine discussions on there. They just want to post misinformed rubbish and have their like-minded pals like it. They’ve had enough of experts........ and also had enough of reasonable discussion. Young people aren’t on Facebook. Twitter is almost as bad, but at least you can tailor that - I only really see stuff about my interests on there. I try to stay away from anything political because seeing people posting rubbish about it is too depressing. Social media needs shutting down. It’s having an awful impact on the way people treat each other and the political landscape.
Are the club's official accounts not open to comments? I thought I'd seen some ugly stuff posted on them. I could be wrong though, as I say, I give twitter and facebook a very wide berth.
They are. But the club deal with those independently and whilst we might not see action being taken I know that it is. You’re not going to spend much time in Oakwell if you’re abusing the club or players on social media put it that way. These groups are just setup by anyone. Completely unofficial.
In full agreement. I said this weeks ago and just had false accusations thrown at me, but even though I use it and get an incredible amount of benefit from it, it’s toxic. The impact it’s having on inferiority as well. Such a small percentage live their real life through social media, so all it does is act as a disguise for insecurities or give insecurities to those who see it. I just about missed it but I’d hate to be a kid growing up with it in today’s world.
I'd certainly start with outlawing algorithms. People should be forced to search out information not have it bombarded at them by anyone. The polarisations in society are there for all to see and these are making it worse.
Jesus! This is a depressing thread! I'd no idea the kind of stuff described here appears on Facebook in connection with BFC fans. I use Facebook a lot but not any of our fans sights. Only one thing to do. Get on there and take them on! If they are talking extreme right wing **** it needs to be called out and some history lessons about Barnsley - the town - won't go amiss either.
The thing that worries me is that these views are out there anyway, whether or not they get onto social media. Even if Facebook and Twitter were shut down the abhorrent views would still exist. It's all so very sad that some people, including some on here, can be so horrible to others. What do they get out of it? Likes? Retweets? Follows? I can't begin to suggest an answer.
I deactivated my Facebook because I realised that I went to school with, or have previously worked with, a lot of racist/bigoted/homophobic people. I feel people on here are generally more open minded, and better educated.
Stopped using FB about 2 years ago, I found it infantile, inane and downright devoid of anything interesting, it's right up there with The Sun newspaper, soap operas and American football.
I argued with someone on that thread last night. An absolute whopper of a man, who called me a racist for saying I thought that people have a right to protest, especially black people who had 100s of years of oppression. His response was I was racist because he’s never had slaves. The average IQ is less than 1.
Slack. My morning pooh, just slipped out this morning with the gentlest of pushes. Every cloud and all that.
This is worst Barnsley board ever according to Tykes Talk ... left wing, anti-democratic and woke! My defence was this board has helped me through some bad times with depression... PM's from people I've never met in person offering me support. Like to think I've helped a few. Always been a little more than football for me ...
This. I grew up in a world of honest debate, where free speech was the way to deal with contentious subjects. Within reason I’d rather have the debate in the open. But then I also see why the BBS would need to ban people for certain behaviour. The problem comes though when people start to believe ridiculous nonsense. It’s tricky to counter people posting absolute lies, trying to get them to see the truth. Somewhere out there, Casual still thinks Trump should be president, and that a lawyer who shares batsh1t conspiracy theories about paedo rings should be taken seriously about constitutional law. And Nudge genuinely believes that he can go round the world saying P*** and anyone who sees that as racist is being over sensitive
