Facebook groups aren’t moderated. There’s no sign up process, no rules, and as a result it’s a free for all. You can come and go as often as you like, say what you want with zero repercussions, and if you do go too far you can just exit stage right and come back a few days later and start again when it’s died down. Despite some of the accusations thrown our way by certain people on the BBS, the complete opposite exists on here. And the result is a richer group of contributors who, even if they wanted to behave in the ‘Facebook way’, know that kind of content just doesn’t fly here. That moderation over the years has also empowered self-policing, although admittedly that can go a bit too far sometimes but it does help.
Have you watched the docu-film “Social Dilemma”? The algorithms which are designed to keep people hooked to Facebook have the side effect of promoting more extreme views and conspiracy theories like pizza gate. People get caught down a rabbit hole and it’s not easy to get out of. I have stoped using Facebook and Twitter since watching it, scary stuff.
I might have to watch this docufilm Wakey as i’m aware of some of the algorithms and how they just deliver demographic based messages around what your “friends” post. A couple of times after Reds matches I’ve considered closing both my Facebook and Twitter accounts because there’s some absolute rhubarb posted, its often aggressive, negative and inaccurate.even though I appreciate we all have an opinion. There is occasionally some very negative stuff posted on here after matches albeit less frequent and less aggressive (generally). I don’t post on social media but I do use it as a way of keeping up to date with things and it can be very useful however, I think the key difference between those media and this site is, as others have posted, much easier to access an app rather than a website on a mobile device and there less, if any moderation. What it needs is a couple of convictions for posts made and it’ll all start to go away
That's not true at all mate. For a long time I was a member of a FB group called Friends of Dodworth Village. To join, you had so sign up by giving some details and answering some questions. Then you were "vetted" by asking existing members if you were "ok". I got through all that and became a member. It was a good group with lots of useful local information. I'm also a member of several long distance walking groups, all of which have clear rules and admin people who remove posts and ban people where necessary. At the start of the corona pandemic in about February 2020, lots of bizarre misinformation posts started to appear on the Dodworth page about covid. The one saying "if you can hold your breath for 10 seconds you've not got it", for example. We've all seen them and laughed at them. There were also (like @JamDrop has said) loads of posts about winning Range Rovers, mobile homes etc, some of them from personal friends in the village. I would often flag them up as untrue, and post links to snopes etc to explain. After a couple of weeks I got a message that I'd been expelled from the group. Apparently I was humiliating the posters by pointing out that what they'd shared was junk. I had no warning, no appeal, no temporary ban, I just got the chop. 2 weeks ago I asked if I could rejoin, since it was 12 months since my original ban. Nope, the ban is indefinite. Several members who know me have appealed on my behalf, to no avail. I'm banned for the rest of my life.
You are, without doubt, the least divisive, most agreeable person I have the pleasure to know. You humiliate anyone? Do me a favour.
Whilst there is a lot of truth in this thread, we ought to acknowledge that there are some posters on here who also seem to have quite worrying views. By which I don’t mean just a different opinion, I mean ill educated and caveman like, not just far right but ingrained prejudice and likely in some cases illegal. I refer you to the thread on brentford not taking the knee as the most recent example. Mostly all balanced discussion, but not all.
To be fair mate I was specifically referencing the conversation we’re having here about Barnsley FC groups, but I didn’t make that abundantly clear. You’re right that there’s loads of moderation goes on in Facebook groups. I’m admin in some, and I’m banned from others!
Thank you! I've asked if I can be given read-only access, so that at least I can see what's going on in my home village, even if I can't post. They won't even allow that. Recently there was lots of useful information about the vaccine, which I didn't get. As a result many of my friends, in the same age group, were vaccinated a couple of weeks before I was. It's a dictatorship.
It’s complicated and there’s already been lots of reasons given, but we’ve missed what is to me the obvious. Forums are moderated, they have rules that mean certain posters will eventually be banned. I’ve not been here that long, but I’ve seen several posters banned for the stuff that’s regularly posted on the FB group. Ergo the BBS is self selecting. So the more important question is why do the people running the FB group not mind out and out racism. I’m pretty sure the club aren’t pleased about the association. edit. Started writing this post before the subject of moderation was mentioned - too late to delete it now.
I never, ever read the club facebook page or twitter page. I know what I'm going to find there more often than not. Apart from the obvious desire for as much publicity as possible I don't know why the club have them. Some of the stuff that gets quoted or copied onto here is atrocious so I'll continue to stay well clear. I can get all the info I need here or via the club website.
I will give credit here to the Forever Red Facebook group. The moderator there kicked off about it all and seems to have deleted all the posts and told them all to grow up.
The groups being discussed here are not groups linked to or endorsed by the club. They're no different to the BBS, just on Facebook.
