Scenes like that are not unusual, there are similar spats up and down the land in a lot of Council Chambers. When I first entered Local Government part of my duties as a trainee Admin Officer was to attend the weekly meetings of the then Doncaster County Borough Council at Doncaster Mansion House. An underlying theme was the tangible animosity between rival political groups. In the main this was confined to the Labour and Conservative representatives. Some of the discussions were bizarre in the extreme. The main Park in Doncaster is Elmfield Park and one particular discussion was held after youths who had been caught by the Police had vandalised plants and shrubs. Tory Councillor Doctor Fenton said " I demand that the identity of the perpetrators of this outrage be disclosed ." A Labour Alderman replied " never mind all your fancy talk, let's have some names."! On another occasion, the Council's Transport Manager reported that the clips on the windscreens of the local trolley buses were faulty, with the result that when activated, they were springing off and being run over by passing traffic. The Chair of the Transport Committe Councillor Mrs C. Wilson said and I'm not making this up, "have you thought of fitting them to the inside of the windscreen.? That way, if they fall off , the driver can pick them up and click them back on." Everybody stared at her expecting a smile, but none was forthcoming. It's only when a fellow Councillor whispered something to her, she went bright red and asked for her comments to be removed from the minutes.
Probably just me, but i can,t believe that this nonsense has made the national news, its where we are now though, judge rinder, jeremy kyle, jerry springer etc, we just seem to love seeing people arguing and backstabbing each other as entertainment, the chairwoman will probably be on i,m a celebrity this year...
Who was actually in the right though? Because I genuinely can't work it out. The chairman seems to be telling her that she can't legally do the position she's appointed herself in. Is he right or wrong? If he's right then the one person completely in the wrong is Jackie.
Have you watched the full meeting or just the edited highlights? Which part do you believe he was wrong with? That a clerk and proper person aren't the same thing? Why would he entertain the idea that's wrong when it isn't?
She's illegally claiming power over a council meeting and won't relinquish that self appointed power? How should he speak to her? Personally I think they're all in the wrong, every single one of them. I don't think it's fair to simply take her side because they are white males though and to bring their gender and skin colour into it when it's nothing to do with that and is all about them ALL being power hungry idiots including jackie
