    A lot happening towards footballers.


    What can be done?


    Whether it's verbally said to someone or written to someone it is still racial abuse and people should be made accountable for their actions.

    Social media companies need to act and take more responsibility and not allow these cowards to hide behind fake accounts.

    Not a huge amount, is the honest answer. Practically impossible, to police global social media platforms with around 3 billion active users. IP masking is also really easy, if people care enough about being anonymous. The ones who get caught & prosecuted are a minute percentage.

    It also means if people complain about such vile incidents, they're accused of being "offended on behalf of others", "woke", "snowflakes", or "it's just banter".

    The really insidious thing about this recent bout of vile behaviour is that it seems to be a clubs’ own supporters after an unexpected loss. Almost as if these people are waiting for the chance to have a go.

    My point was among 3billion active users, not many get caught. I didn’t say it wasn’t possible. I’m glad he’s been arrested.

    As a software developer, it would be very easy to apply analysis to all messages posted and detect anything racist. With modern AI techniques the algorithm would be self-improving as it learns about racist language. A far easier task than say writing software for driverless cars...

    Edit. There has to be a will to do it so don't expect it any time soon.

    Loads can be done. The amount of algorithms used to influence what we see and interact with online by big tech in California or China, and we can’t flush out the racists?

    Why aren’t some of the words used banned? Why isn’t there a swear filter for something where access is anything from eight years old to 80?

    Why is it almost socially acceptable to say certain things in public forums?

    What can do we do to change the culture that fishing for likes is a positive?

    Why can’t specific phrases be loaded to the network and if used have accounts automatically deleted and the IP details sent somewhere with no anonymous accounts allowed?

    Do we think that there’s a reluctance to tackle this as it may have a negative effect on the share price of the companies holding the monopoly?

    This is what really annoys me. Just seems to be acceptable to brush everything off. The term “snowflake” is just used as an excuse in my opinion. I’ve backed off alot of social media recently because I struggle with people who think they can say what they want under the justification that everyone else is too p.c. How about people just show a but more respect?!

    it would be interesting to see that play out. easy enough to say 'if post contains the n word, delete post'. but what about 'if post contains monkey emoji', or 'if post contains go back home'? definitely a whole raft of phrases you could codify, but I wonder how accurate it would be, and how many perfectly reasonable posts would be flagged as offensive? what about regional dialect, language barriers, cultural differences, interpretation, inference? would you also need to allow a huge volume of posts through in the first place, in order to collect the data and train the AI? you obviously know how big data and AI algorithms work, so I do genuinely take your point.

    That kind of abuse is far removed from the ‘ snowflake’ thing which is used when somebody thinks somebody else is being over sensitive.
    This kind of thing is abhorrent to any right thinking person

    the internet mess with peoples brains,videos of all kinds of horrid things easily passed,someone said to me other day.watch this video of this accident his head comes off, I was I don't want to watch that,my son when he was 11, going his mates big brother showed him a rude thing with something happening to a lady and he didnt llike it t, I went mental,why are all these things available to mess with folks heads so easily,sorry its off subject but all in the mix of bad things online

    The second you insist that people use their real identities they will move to a platform that doesn't. If you legislate for it they will use technological solutions to get around it. If you ban certain terms they will use others. Trolls will always exist, making them the top story on BBC sport will only encourage others. The simple answer is to block and report.

    It baffles me that in 2020, you still don't have to prove your identity to use Facebook, and Twitter etc.

    There'd certainly be a lot less cowardly behaviour if people couldn't hide behind a profile.

    I was on a dating app a few years ago, and you had a week to prove your identity on that or your account would be deactivated. It was as simple as providing my details, and taking a picture of myself on my camera, which they then matched to the photos in my profile. Simple, and verified within 30 minutes.

    Then people could be held accountable for their activity.
