Starmer's working in a backdrop of complete chaos. Just finished another shift on the frontline of Brexit mayhem. He's working with half a tool set, I'm a socialist and I'm not in anyway a Starmer fanboy. He's trying to limit damage of this government, point fingers in a different direction. Namely those supposedly in charge ffs!
I think some folk in Barnsley have a real issue with those who do well for themselves which is sad. You seldom hear a good word about Michael Parkinson or Dickie Bird both proud to be from Barnsley and often speak fondly of the town but are criticised for bettering themselves. That seems to transcend into your political thinking someone who has been Knighted can't possibly lead the Labour Party why is that? I really worry when someone being successful is frowned upon especially when its someone who did it through hard work and not off the back of mummy and daddy. We should all aspire to be successful should we not instead of sneering at anyone who does?
Starmer isn't Corbyn, but he knows how to run a complex government department. I never had any issues CPS during his time . He was bold and pretty fearless in taking cases to court. For that I'm extremely grateful and know for a fact his heart is in the right place.
I think I can help here. In this political climate, a socialist is a politician who won’t get elected. Eg: Some of the anti Starmer, tory lite type of views on here are straight out of the Mail , the people are falling for it in exactly the same way they fell for the anti Corbyn propaganda.
All the "socialist Starmer haters seem to be missing the point that Corbyn lost twice, the first time to May even though she and her campaign imploded during the campaign and second time against a proven liar whose turned out to be the worst PM since Chamberlain. Bleat àll you want about Starmer being Tory lite or Red Tory he's much more likely to win a GE than Corbyn ever was because to win a GE you have to appeal to more people than read the Morning Star and carry a copy of the thoughts of Chairman Moa. Starmer is doing OK nothing spectacular but ok bit like Tony Blair when he became leader, he's wiped out Bojo the clowns 20% poll lead within a year despite Bojo "getting brexit done". As for those holding the fact he's been knighted against him that's just inverted snobbery you should be applauding the fact a bloke from a working class background as worked his way up to hold a position of power like head of the CPS and been recognised with a knighthood for doing so not holding it against him FFS
I'm not sure whether I'm being encouraged to reject him because of what he is (a knight), or what he says (stay at home). In the first case it seems to be that he can't be a socialist, because he doesn't look like Lenin and wear one of those natty Russian revolution caps, oh! and he doesn't believe what I believe about the honours system. The second is more important, because this is what got us into this mess in the first place, both here and in the US. I should only vote for what I want to hear, even if what I'm being told is lies. Anybody telling the truth should be pulled down and consigned to the bin as we quietly live in a Tory Utopia that threatens lives during a pandemic and worker's rights in the longer term.
I read a poll a company called U-Earth did and the result was three quarters of Brits said they will never shake hands again. That is sad that so many think that way to a good way to great someone. We are social beings so stopping such minimal contact is a very sad reminder how much peoole have been scared.
I take polls with a pinch of salt i don't often shake hands nowadays but I'll certainly hug and kiss my friends like I would have done before COVID when I'm finally allowed to meet up with them again. And I'm not a very tactile person usually.
The handshake is a western tradition dating back to Ancient Greece. Other cultures have different methods of greeting - such as bowing, curtseying, sticking out your tongue, kissing on the cheeks, touching foreheads - and new methods appear occasionally - fistbumps, etc. A lot of my colleagues are big into the handshakes - every week in some cases - but it can be awkward and people are rightly giving concern to the passing of germs through the act itself. Would you be offended if someone shook your hand then applied hand sanitiser straight afterwards? It might be time for a new greeting to replace it.
Then there is the mis-use of the handshake where some people feel the need to bust your knuckles to show supremacy. Power crazy or what.
I hope that the hand shake stays. It might take people a while to get used to it again but it's a good way to greet someone.
Another dreadful week for him. Cracking the whip to support a worse deal than May’s & the one Corbyn proposed when there was no need to due to the Tories majority. And then ignoring loads of Labour MP’s & unions calling for schools to stay shut after Christmas to support Boris only to then call for them to shut after a day. Lost any right to criticise either now.
Can't renegotiate brexit terms at this point unfortunately - it's done, and this deal was the last one anyone was willing to negotiate. No point opposing something just to be a roadblock. Seems like he messed up on schools - but then so did the government. I don't think that he should be criticised for supporting the government with the measures they're taking on the pandemic. Dissenting voices could do harm to the following of the rules. He's criticising them on the things they're really messing up on.
We're still a very long time from the next scheduled election and as such, policy right now is pointless, especially considering the brexit fall out and the pandemic. Having said that, I find it bewildering one of the few things he has commented on so clearly is to rule out something he pledged in his election bid, the aim to reinstall freedom of movement with the EU.
3 years, 2 months (I'm not counting, honest!) near enough to the day that Parliament is dissolved before the May 2024 general election - unless FTPA is repealed or some other law prevents it.
FTPA is certainly on the tory hitlist. Unless they go down the pan in all their polling, then obviously it will be retained so they can cling on right to the bitter end.
