I’ve read a lot of George Orwell but never this, his essay on the nature of the British and what England is. Fascinating. Written in 1940 but goes a long way to explaining where we’ve ended up today regarding Brexit. Read here… https://www.orwellfoundation.com/th...the-unicorn-socialism-and-the-english-genius/
I can’t remember the exact wording but there’s a paragraph that suggests the lady in the rolls Royce harms morale more than German bombs. It is years since I read though.
Although I said I wouldn’t quote…. “One of the dominant facts in English life during the past three quarters of a century has been the decay of ability in the ruling class. By the 1930s the British ruling class obviously could not admit to themselves that their usefulness was at an end. There was only one escape for them – into stupidity. They could keep society in its existing shape only by being unable to grasp that any improvement was possible. Difficult though this was, they achieved it, largely by fixing their eyes on the past and refusing to notice the changes that were going on round them." Not much changes.
