Jim McLean gave me some of my best memories of Supporting Dundee United. Saw us win our first trophy. The league cup in 79. And retain the trophy in 80 Saw us win the league in 83. Saw us reach the European Cup semi final. Saw us reach the UEFA Cup final. And many many other great European nights and numerous cup finals. Unfortunately Wee Jim did not have a great record when it came to Scottish Cup Finals. Jim you made me so happy and proud to be an Arab. Thank you Jim and God Bless. R.I.P.
That's sad news. Remember as a kid following the UEFA Cup run on the TV with great excitement. I can only imagine what it must have been like for the fans actually being there.
Indeed it does. I've just heard my mate has passed away. He wasn't bad for a blunt; I'm going to miss getting pi55ed with him on strawberry beer in the Sheffield Tap. Fϋck, fϋck, fϋckerty fϋck.
Sounds like he gave you some good memories and a proper football man, that's some record. I've never met you but you also sound like a decent man, I'm sure you'll have a wee dram to his memory
Yes mate. It was near the end of his manager/ chairmanship era. He told the journalist he would not be answering certain questions. The daft journalist decided he’d ask them anyway. Live on tv Jim got annoyed and laid him out. That then was the end for Jim and Dundee United.
RIP Jim McLean. Amazing to this day how many of his side I can recall - Narey, Hegarty, Sturrock, Dodds, Kirkwood, Bannon, McAlpine, Gough, Malpas, Milne and all of them were cracking players, blended together by a fine manager to form a fine team. Nobody can take memories away, the game may have changed for the worse but those memories. Raise a glass Ian.
TBH that sounds mint and I'm sort of on his side, get the passion. He's trying to achieve something and the journos by and large are just living off the fat of the land. Bit like Cantona and the seagulls follow the trawler, except in your team's case it appears the trawler had a 22mm anti-aircraft cannon.
Sorry to hear of Jim McLeans death Ian. If I remember correctly, over two decades he placed great emphasis on bringing young players through the ranks which obviously saved the Arabs a lot of money on transfer fees. His greatest legacy of course is that in the 82/83 season he brought the Scottish Football League title to Tannadice. RIP Jim.
Pretty amazing stuff this. Had no idea about the victories in the 60's as well! https://www.nottheoldfirm.com/analysis/dundee-united-and-their-100-record-against-barcelona/
Unfortunately Merde those days will sadly never return. I was lucky to have witnessed a United team who arguably were one of the best in Europe and I thank Jim McLean for that. Today’s game is so different and not for the better. Bosman and the money men from Sky have ruined the beautiful game. But my memories remain.
But has it not always been the case? Throughout the years the championship has swung to either Celtic or Rangers with only the occasional blip when Hearts Hibs or Aberdeen have won it. So Jim winning the League with a small provincial club is an even bigger achievement.
