    …the pubs were shut at Christmas? Probably never ever happened before.

    Just passed my local, all in darkness and empty apart from the sad Christmas tree.:(

    In the seventies we lived in Aylesbury in Bucks & the pubs shut there on Xmas day but those are my only memories of them closing

    Christmas Day, yes some did- or were only open lunchtime - but I meant the Christmas period.

    Dont think its ever happened before - even in WW1 and WW2 there were restrictions on opening times but they werent ordered to shut completely
    Same with Spanish flu - though mask wearing was encouraged and some theatres and restaurants stayed closed. Nothing like we have today though

    "Wash inside nose with soap and water each night and morning." Chris Whitty needs to be promoting that I reckon.
