A positive news story for once (this year has been horrible for bad news) as gay couples can now give blood, which will save more lives by boosting supply.
I never knew they couldn't give blood until now. What a ridiculous society we live in that people deemed "gay" blood different from everyone else's. I'm glad sense had prevailed in the end, but this took way too long
I think the ban was more to do with fears about HIV infection 30-odd years ago. Taken a long time, but welcome news.
They always ask if you’ve had sex with someone of the same sex or a sex worker in the last 3 months as a knockout question. Along with intravenous drug use. as risk management it’s 30 yrs out of date. But it always makes me feel like a right boring fart
When this news was broken by the BBC on Facebook, one of the first comments was by a woman who stated that she’d better be given the option to have non-gay blood... When called out on it, she said she wasn’t bigoted, and it was the person who called her out that is a bigot as he was ‘denying her a choice’... Unbelievable
I used to donate blood twice a year, starting when I was in college. I still cannot donate blood over here due to CJD ... "We currently can't take blood donations from people who lived in the UK for six months or more from 1 January 1980 to 31 December 1996. The UK refers to England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, Isle of Man and the Falkland Islands."
