Cameras on the self scan machines at asda

To be honest ST I think anyone who knows that they are on camera are in the minority, as I am in the belief that if you visit a town , city or retail park etc you could be picked up on camera in the region of up to70 times in a day , I personally never take notice & apart from the obvious places ,I never know when & where the camera has picked me up , what I do know is that solving crimes is greatly assisted by the use of cctv & I am all for it but it is all about opinions .

 

That's kind of what I meant. We all know we're on camera wandering about but we don't actually know for sure so you can just ignore it and carry on. With these things the image of yourself is staring you in the face which is totally different. It isn't about identifying a thief because they've already got you on camera many times already by this point, it's all about intimidation and making sure you're aware you're being watched which is a totally different thing for me.

I've also read that they come with facial recognition software built in which is moving into a totally different area again

 

Can't say I agree. I'd rather use a person than a machine though, and it keeps people in work.
That said, I'm a hypochlorite because I go to the shortest queue - which is often a machine.

 

Forget the camera. The thing you need to be focused on at Asda is the price shown on the screen, especially on anything marked as rollback or some other special offer. The till prices and the shelf prices aren't always in sync.

 

I would imagine they are there for fraud prevention to identify the user of Credit and or debit cards, you can hardly contest the purchase of a 55:inch TV with the bank if the retailer as a video / Picture of you scanning the item through and using your card to pay for it.

 

But even then the decision to put your image on the screen isn't about that it's about intimidating you which is just a bit weird

 

That's all supermarkets mate and not just the special offers. If you get chance always check the receipt on the way out because as sure as eggs are eggs there will be at least one discrepancy. It might only be a few pence, but if they do that for everyone think how many more millions of pounds they're making over the course of a year

Bit weird aren't they. They've got the same ones at Tesco but they dont display it on the the screen so it really is just CCTV, at Asda it's staring back at you while you are scanning. It isn't jus there on the 'welcome' screen it's there the entire time while you scan and it's pretty distracting. Actually I wonder if maybe that's the idea, as @Tyke_67 and @Old Goat say there are often pricing errors, if they distract you whilst you're paying maybe you won't notice it

 

Like I say ST, try and check your receipt on your way out for pricing errors, because as soon as you walk out of the store they won't admit liability. It's happened to me (for more than a few pence - i'm talking a couple of quid) and I didn't notice until I got home. So I made an extra journey the day after to query it and they said they needed to see the whole shopping trolley to check all the items! I kid you not. I made an official complaint to the manager and I'm still waiting to hear back. This was September 2019.

 

I wouldn't want to see myself pop up the camera might add ten pounds.

 

The way it was described to us at work is that any known shoplifter or banned individual whether it be in Asda or any other store is on a database and the facial recognition cameras are their to pick up on any that have sneaked in unnoticed. The 2 major flaws with it are, 1) everyone wearing masks makes it a bit harder and 2) shoplifters aren't renowned for going through the tills but straight out of the fire exits

 

Some people get excited when they see themselves on TV even if it is just the self scan till monitor at Asda.

 

Its a great sentiment unfortunately, manned(or womanned) tills are slowly being phased out. Some chains are already trialling stores that are self service only

 

The kids will love it. When I visited my daughter in Liverpool all I could see was my ugly mug on the screen on the bus!

 

You'd think it would make more sense to have the facial recognition camera at the entrance wouldn't you. And I wonder if banning someone from the store and then keeping their image in a database is legal

 

In the old days the same effect was created by the checkout worker wearing mirror aviators.
