On the USA post Camp tour, the four of us headed down to Key West. We’d been a couple of days and nights on the Greyhound and were looking forward to meeting up with some if our fellow campmates.
In the end, thirteen of us were in Key West at the same time, so we decided to join forces and try and book a couple of rooms in one of the recommended Backpackers lodges, to save a bit of money.
The only problem was that the lodge was full, as was the next one. We were getting a bit desperate at the third lodge, which was also full.
Then the owner said he might be able to help .... there was a hotel in the same chain that might have vacancies.
He rang up and arranged for us to head down to the other hotel. We couldn’t believe our eyes when we got there. It was the Marriott five star
hotel with the private Residents only beach - Kokomo Beach.
Thirteen of us crammed into one family suite! I’m sure it wouldn’t happen now, but we just couldn’t believe our luck.
Wall to wall glamour - and then us with our rucksacks!
The next day by the pool was a sight to behold. Thirteen scruffy students, sitting alongside film star types, women with bikinis and stillettos, swim up bar, jacuzzis, and towel waiters.

Went to Sri Lanka on my own when I was 20 to watch the cricket T20 world cup and had enough experiences to last a lifetime, it's an totally bonkers place.Highlights included:
    - bribing a policeman to skip a massive queue when collecting cricket tickets
    - getting in a tuk tuk to the temple, but instead being taken to a jewellery store and not being allowed to leave until i bought an overpriced gem
    - getting 2 tuk tuk drivers to race some other english fans to the stadium, with the winner getting paid more, they were maniacs without the money nevermind when racing
    - being the only white person in a huge stand and the locals being completely obsessed with me, wanting photos and climbing all over me
    - going on a 215 mile round trip from Colombo to Sigiriya and it taking about 12 hours because the roads and driving are so bad, we literally had lorries driving at us whilst we were turfed in the bushes
    - taking the hotel porter and his 2 friends to the cricket as a treat and spending the day surroudned by sri lanka, india and pakistan fans which was the most fun and tiring day i've ever had
