    Barnsley’s first Covid marshals officially hit the streets this week in a bid to crackdown on people flouting the coronavirus lockdown rules.

    Although they have no formal enforcement powers, members of the team will be connected by radio to the police.

    The marshals will advise and support members of the public and businesses by reminding people to follow guidelines, such as wearing a face covering, managing queues and supporting social distancing in crowded areas.

    The marshalls wear blue high-visibility jackets and will operate across the borough until 22:00 on weekdays and 20:00 at weekends.

    Councillor Jenny Platts said: “We hope the Covid marshals will be able to take some of the pressure away from police and council officers who have worked tirelessly through the pandemic."

    Job creation scheme. That moves traffic wardens off the bottom rung of “most hated people on the streets “.

    Just to assure folk the Marshall's I've seen aren't idiots they're local officials. It may extend to private contractors in a few weeks which is worrying. Been in a briefing on this due to my union links, the officials and our police aren't going to act like Leicestershire police.
    My view from the meeting; don't act like a tw*t taking the piss you'll be fine. We all know the complexity of life you won't be fined for seeing someone who's in your very limited social bubble.

    They are a mixture of traffic wardens given a new jacket, doormen, private security (SIA badged from Active Response mostly) and the recently recruited in Barnsley.

    No they're not, was in the meeting. If incidents increase on a huge scale then maybe this could happen.

    Im sorry, I don’t believe you. It takes a very specific personality trait to want to be a Covid marshall. And that personality type isn’t the ‘live and let live’ sort.

    Yes you were right.

    It appears these are a different type to the Covid Marshalls whove been walking around for the last few weeks...
