    No, it means that you can’t be sent off for a bad tackle if the ball is not in play.

    But that isn't true. If you launched at someone whilst waiting for a throw in, you could be sent off.

    But if a defender kicks the ball out of play and a striker cleans him out long after the ball has gone is that just a bad tackle and so he cant be sent off

    There is another red card offence 'foul or abusive language ' which I suspect account for many of these.

    The most embarrassing part of this is that he actually could have sent him off for serious foul play (Richarlison was later sent off for that when the ref had blown for a foul which happened a second before), but the var decided Pickford’d challenge wasn’t serious foul play.

    Two footed, knee high, a mile from the ball. The guy needs sacking as he was woefully wrong at the Tottenham game before that.
