His wife has been on furlough since march and has been sat at home all day every day with a constant barrage of doom and gloom covid news forced on her from the radio, TV, newspapers and essentially every media source. It all became too much for her and she was rushed to hospital last night after attempting to take her own life.

This is the very real human cost to these restrictions and to these job losses.

Hope she recovers and gets the support she needs. It is important to get out every day, to have that human contact.

Tragic to hear, hope she can get her the help she needs.
My wife got to a very bad place earlier in the year. I don't know if it's the correct term or not but simplest way I can describe it is a "breakdown" she didn't attempt anything but she was having thoughts of wanting to die. She couldn't function at all. We ended up at hospital and got some support (though the after care has been very patchy)
We now ignore the rules on household mixing and make sure she has support around her from family and friends. We also do not watch the news at all or any of the "topical" programmes. If you just sat and watched ITV for one day its completely overwhelming.

It's hard to do that though when the media backed by the government is using scare tactics.
If you didn't know better and had stayed indoors then listening to what Boris and his mates are saying through the media you would think there are zombies walking the streets infecting people.

Tragic story. Hope she pulls through and gets as much help as is available out there.

I think that's an over reaction to the news, talking about govt scare tactics. There's plenty of people offering different opinions. Someone I know is taking things to the extreme and I worry about her, but that anxiety has always been present even before COVID.

You have to put some effort into seeing the bigger picture though. If you just way and listened to a day of mainstream news on tv you would think hospitals are overflowing with bodies. No context is given.

To be honest I haven't watched any for a couple of months so maybe it has improved. It was horrific to start with. Then if you do look a little deeper into the consequences of all these restrictions it's even more depressing.

It makes you wonder how people survived POW camps, how they're coping now in Syria etc.

So sorry to read that, I hope she gets the help she needs. The MSM and our politicians all are responsible for how much fear they have put in to the nation for something with a massive survival rate. Boris these days can't even rely on his pro Tory rag who have done another wonderful piece......

I didn't watch it for a long time but for some reason I've seen a lot in the last week and I have to say it's left me feeling really down and unable to see any end in sight. I've not seen anything positive at all on the TV just constant doom and gloom

Well I was watching bbc breakfast news the other day and they were talking about the logistics of getting a vaccine rolled out and talking about early next year.

To be honest that's a very poor way of looking at mental health. A bit like when rich people suffer with depression, it's still real. POW camps and the situation in Syria are awful. That doesn't have any bearing on how anyone copes with anything else though.
Or were just meaning given how hard just dealing with this is you don't know how any copies with that?

The effects on mental health during this awful time are beyond compare.

My good wishes to her and anyone struggling to manage.

No, I understand that poor mental health can affect anyone. More the latter. Unfortunately my young adult children have known too many deaths from suicide of their friends and peers. At the same age I knew none.
