Football League Shake Up

Liverpool and Manchester United to lead the way in changing things.
Is this the start of the richest clubs going it alone and just ditching the rest of the clubs.
I’ve got to say it amazed me that Celtic and Rangers were still spending millions when tbh there was no real need to as both with end up 1 and 2 in the league. Only the order is unclear.
I’m now wondering if a move to another set up is on the horizon for them and this latest move by Liverpool and Man U does not make me think any different.

The idea is to address long-standing EFL concerns about the huge gap in funding between its divisions and the Premier League by handing over 25% of the annual income.

There would be a £250m up front payment to address the existing crisis created by the coronavirus pandemic. In addition, the Football Association would receive what is being described as a £100m "gift".

 

The last paragraph says it all. Money at the root of it. Man C played fewer prem games than Villa but to be involved in the new set up. Villa told no.
Not looking good for Barnsley’s involvement.

 

Just sounds like a shake up though reducing the number of teams in PL and getting rid of EFL cup. Just reducing the number of games the "big" clubs play. Gifting monies to EFL clubs to compensate for lack of competition and gate money by the looks so far

 

seems to me that they are trying to make an even bigger gulf between the lower leagues.

I stopped giving a damn about the Premier League many years ago. Hopefully this is one step closer to the big six heading off to a European Super League and good riddance to em.

 

Been talking about that since the 90s though. That's why the PL was created

 

How would this reduce the gulf? Surely it would increase it?
Instead of 3 every season going up it could result in only one, meaning the money from being in the PL is more likely to be shared around the same clubs

 

I thought that I would list the bullet points in the BBC report, as a way of ensuring we all understand the proposal.


Proposal

Number of clubs in Premier League to be reduced from 20 to 18.

EFL Cup discontinued

Charity Shield discontinued

14 club majority (70%) for PL decisions to be changed

25% of annual income (assume that this is the sale of TV rights only) given to EFL

Parachute payments paid to clubs relegated from PL to be discontinued

£250m payment to tackle possible insolvency of EFL clubs, to be paid immediately.

Additional £100m gift to EFL

Big 6 clubs plus 3 others (50% of the new league) granted special status (no indication what special status is).


What we do not know

Promotion and relegation arrangements under the new arrangements

The replacement for the PL parachute (will clubs simply have to sell all their players upon relegation, or will there be no relegation)

Can the EFL cup continue without PL presence?


My back of a *** packet calculations suggest that the Premier League currently shares about £192m + parachute payments with clubs in the Championship. The *** packet suggests that this sum would rise to about £750m, although that would be shared by all 74 of the clubs in the revised EFL.


It has to be pointed out that the Championship has been very poorly run since the advent of the Premier League, with clubs mortgaging their future for a crack at the Premier League. The PL money could simply be thrown away unless something is done to address that problem, because the way that the Championship is run is simply not sustainable. If promotion/relegation continues as it is now, then the situation will remain a huge problem. That means that Championship reform must be adopted at the same time as the change in PL funding. Frankly, removing promotion and relegation from the Premier League would create a sustainable EFL better than any other proposed reform.


Of course, that conclusion is not going to go down well with the majority of fans, who dream that their club might well play in the Premier League. They characterise the funding problems of Barnsley FC differently to the way that I do. They argue that the owners should employ a different strategy to the long term break even strategy to they currently use. They argue that our owners should be matching the spending of other Championship club owners, even though their spending is plunging their clubs into debt and jeopardising their continued existence.


A solution must be found, and COVID19 has simply emphasised the need for a solution.

 

Sky, give a bit more detail on it:

Special status - 9 clubs (big 6+3 others). Meaning that if 6 of those 9 agree, changes to league can be made without 8nput of others. That sounds like to me a way of ensuring the ‘big 6’ are ring fencing their interests.
£100 million ‘gift’ is to FA not EFL.

Until fans are back in the stadia footballs going to die a very slow painful death.

Although it is quite enjoyable watching United and Liverpoo getting their arses handed to them it was missing something.

Currently needs 14 of the 20 to say yes. All clubs will still get to vote but it only would, need 6 out of 9 to say yes.
It seems a bit crap for the others like you say, if I recall Gartside at Bolton tried to do a similar thing and it was rejected.
