We don't know the circumstances yet as to how he got to custody, he may have walked in himself. If he has been transported in someone has dropped a bollock big time. We shall wait and see.

Then you'd be no better than him, really, would you?

Glad you never went as far as making him wear a Leeds scarf and a Wednesday shirt.

I think this is what happened, therefore no need to be suspicious I suppose.

What a sad, sad world we live in now. No one is safe anywhere anymore.

"The victim was believed to be a few weeks away from retirement"

Sincere condolences to his wife and family. I have no idea what they must be going through at this point

I'd like to think so Helen. It was never this bad before was it?

Bad things have always happened, just we live in a 24hr media frenzy now.

IRA troubles, Hindley/ Brady, Sutcliffe, Wests, Huntley, Shipman etc etc...

I suppose you're right mate. Why people have to do things like this is beyond me. Live and let live, we aren't here long enough anyway, why people have to harm and kill others I'll never know

The arrested person should have been searched before he was placed in the police vehicle. The arresting officers have clearly failed in this and placed their poor colleague in a deadly situation. RIP I feel for all affected at this time.

You are lucky in that respect but at the same time it isn't just luck. I always mock you for being 800 years old but in all seriousness now that you are erm 'knocking on a bit' it means you've shaped the way the younger members of your family think and act which means that their tolerance and kindness is in no small part down to you so you should take great pride I that.

I totally agree. I've pointed out to Crystal that, according to you, I'm solely responsible for their attitude. Just me.:D

Of course it's only you that has promoted tolerance and equality in your family, we both know Crystal is only a woman so nobody would listen to her anyway.

If anyone wants me I will be behind the sofa

    Condolences to the family.

hopefully this will produce an even more draconian response on gun laws. We don’t want a Wild West show like they have in America

BBC reporter saying that the scumbag was taken to the police station.
If true then many questions must be answered by those officers who escorted him into the station

As a historian I think it has been. Different eras have different bits of good and bad.

I agree with most of this, the arresting officer is in control / and has overall responsibility for the search. The officers on the van must also be sure a full search of person has been conducted. I'm at a loss why he wasn't cuffed, nowadays you always cuff folk. That doesn't mean they have to be on tight or to rear. You never know if someone compliant will turn nasty, you always need to have control. Cuffing is for theirs and your safety. I've seen too many folk under the influence (not always evident with drugs) turn into the Tazmanian devil.
Its shocking all round, I won't go into the politics of the matter but reduced numbers sometimes mean corners are cut.
Everytime an officer is hurt and killed is a timely reminder of how a random job can turn into something sinister. I'm just so sad for the family, he's probably done thousands of similar calls and this happens.
Its rough out there, folk hate authority and I regularly get abuse. Assaults are increasing by the month, officers don't make a fuss about it but the Police Federation speak the truth. I can also confirm its getting worse, it doesn't help that some folk see us through an American lense. We're the Feds, pigs, racists or oppressors of people. We do have bad apples but we're nowhere near as bad as our Yank cousins.
We still police by consent and try our best. We're still the best in the world.
Tonight I'll be raising a glass or bottle of best claret to my hard working colleagues and our fallen.
