Not sure if it’s the small terrace or the fact that it’s a long way to Exeter and everyone must’ve been steaming, but the celebrations look exaggerated, like everyone’s on pogo sticks! As the kids would say today ‘scenes’ lol. Wish I was old enough to have gone on the old terrace at Oakwell, bet there was nothing like it

There was nothing like the old terraces, I have to admit. There’s similar footage of a win at Plymouth a week or two before where the same kind of celebrations can be seen. I was somewhere on that one, bouncing about lol. I think we had 3 long away games on the trot if I remember correctly. We also won at Portsmouth in between. The Exeter game was the only one I missed.
Still my favourite time to be a Reds fan. Great side to watch at that time. Happy memories....

Thanks for sharing that! There's something about watching the old footage too... I can't get nostalgic because I wasnt born, but I feel a connection just because it's us and some of you lot were actually there! I know grounds/stadiums had to change for obvious reasons, but it is a shame, as I imagine atmosphere/character of individual grounds is lost.

Part of Exeter's St. James' Park had a privet hedge as part of it's boundary. We were stood on the terracing in front of their stand that day, with quite a few home fans around us. They were all extremely complimentary about that Barnsley team. At the end of the game, they were lining up to shake our hand, wish us well for the rest of the season and to have a safe journey home.

Can remember going to Halifax when they had speedway track round. We were behind a goal, very little terracing, and bushes immediately behind us. It started teeming down and under the bushes we went

I loved it in the 70s when there were no fences so you could walk all the way round the ground on the terrace....

It was mostly grey shale if I remember correctly, like the top end of our Kop used to be?

Very early 60’s Mike speedway had recently been put in so behind the goals hadn’t been landscaped and was still grass banks and bushes

Yes I saw it like that. Funnily enough where I am now, in Opole, their ground is similar except for one large cantilever stand. Polish second division.

It always seemed to be raining when we went to The Shay! Invariably, we were stood near the top of the grass banking behind the goal. Twenty minutes into the game, we were down at the bottom without moving a step, simply having the mud giving way and depositing us at pitch level!:D

One of my first experiences of an open terrace was Blackpool away in a friendly just after relegation (98). Was an eye-opener after visits to Premier League grounds the year before. Just googled and it was quite a view from the home end facing it with the tower behind. Also enjoyed visiting York, Belle Vue, Millmoor, Scarborough etc, proper shed-type stands. Used to love going McCain stadium when on holiday, proper ground and good club. Shame it folded but new club coming back up through the leagues. Again was strange going there on a Tuesday night in league cup couple of months after relegation at Filbert Street (and shortly after that Blackpool match). Driving back to Barnsley you could see lines of red lights in single file for miles ahead on those single roads towards Driffield etc, heading back home. Think we won 1-0!
